Fuck AI
"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"
A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.
AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.
I had to use various AIs to create an SOP for one of my courses this year. It was so much more exhausting than just writing one because there's so much you can't trust in it. Almost every section had a very specific reference that I needed to check to be sure it wasn't hallucinating.
Luckily I was supposed to pick one as my favorite, so I chose the one with the fewest specific references, deleted the few it had and generalized them instead.
Checked out the necessary books for citations the afternoon before. Chugged an energy drink. One draft submitted before the deadline. Grabbed breakfast. Passed out in class. TWICE.
I vividly remember people writing 10+ page diaries for foreign language classes as homework before home internet was common where I lived.
Tho I will be fair, "lack of internet" was a big reason it was possible. The inherent boredom.
In high school, I was on the Academic Decathlon team. The book everyone was supposed to read for the literature portion was Frankenstein. I never read it, but at the regional competition I won the essay contest on the question of whether Frankenstein or his creation was the true monster.
I was really good at bullshitting my way through an essay.
Today in things that definitely happened...
Nothing ever happens. No college age kid has ever said dumb, sheltered shit. You got 'em.
This is going to get a lot of downvotes, but I stand by it. The only good thing about AI is getting the sources. It will find you obscure links and teach you how to find it yourself. I think it's the only guilt-free way to use it as well.
That is ... when it didn't just completely hallucinate the sources.
There are always a lot of "ai would be good for ____ if _____". And this is the con. Nothing against you personally here but...
It'd be good if it wasnt owned by trillionaires
It'd be good if it didnt destroy earth and take up all our land
It'd be good if it gave accurate info
It'd be good if it wasnt massive theft of human creation that will never be paid back but instead sold to us in a subscription model
It'd be good if it didnt cause all computing costs to skyrocket therefore limiting the normal persons ability to compute (which is the long term plan of the slopbot overlords)
It'd be good if the end goal wasnt the surveillance state and full-on fascism
Etc..
Yeah, get it to find sources and 1/2 of them don’t exist, but the other half are average to high quality so you can use them to put together a paper.
Of course the problem is that people get lazy and don’t actually look up the sources.
I think this is probably the most true. You do have to weed through it, like I said, like Wikipedia.
Search engines used to be excellent for getting the sources. AI citing sources is worse than search engines used to be.
