Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

whenever these things drive by slowly, you can just get on.

just like that. just - just jump on, stand on these steps. no one can stop you. no one will try to get you off, thatd be dangerous.

where will it bring you?

take a backpack with drinks and food and enjoy the ride.

really tho. what's gonna happen?

worst case, u end up in a far away train station and you get looked at weirdly.

old peeps keep saying they had such adventures back then.
it feels like everything fun one can do is bad for you, unsafe, unhealthy or inappropriate.

what are we supposed to do? play veloren all day?

if u wanna

i don't think i've ever seen a freight train go by a station slowly. whenever they slow down they switch to tracks away from the platforms. also most freight here is timber and i don't wanna be final destinationed...

anyway hii :) i'm doing good :) the new job is motivating which is a big improvement from the last few ones... but the loss of the free time that came with my eight months of unemployment definitely makes itself felt. no more multi-hour daily walks. temps got up to 24°C here this week and i feel like i'm dying. my poor scandinavian constitution isn't made for anything above 20. give me -25 anyday.

i've not heard of veloren before, is it more of an rpg than the other block game? i couldn't figure out what you're supposed to be doing from the getting started page.

as somebody who has trainhopped (in the usa) let me clear up a few things, in most places it is illegal to jump on a freight train and ride it, and in some places you simply will not be safe attempting this. i have been shot at by "bulls" aka the security in train yards, and i have heard stories of people who have been killed this way. another serious concern is that these trains may not stop for 20+ hours (they have multiple drivers on board) and there is no guarantee that you will have things like shade, so you could be in the sun the entire time. if you dont have enough food and water you may have trouble getting of the train, and falling asleep on a moving train is a serious hazard. this isnt to say that this cant be done with some relative saftey and ease, but you shouldbe extremely cautious and be aware of the risks before you attempt anything like this.

on a more lighthearted note yea i have been really wanting to hitchhike again like what the hell am i doing right now just looking for a job when i could be having adventure? i still worry about a few things but like gosh girl you dream about this litteraly every night, well sometimes they are nightmares, but those are rare nowdays :)

In Canada conductors and engineers are told not to engage with train hoppers, just call ahead to the next stop so that the train companies private police force can deal with them.

You’re reminding me of the scene in the movie Into the Wild where the main character gets beat half to death by a bull. It’s crazy to me they’re free to shoot at people without there being an actual risk.

Theres a channel on youtube called "shiey", he does urban exploration and train surfing; he's even been featured in a tv news report.

Is this like 3 posts in one? 1.- Train hopping cool

2.- Veloren? I'll give it a try, is it mainly social? that's what i've been needing lately.

3.- i'm doing great! Recently got in touch with the side of me that need to be flirty and romantic and luckily found an outlet for it that doesn't consider me a wallet
