If you buy from scalpers, you're part of the problem.

You can build or buy a lot more computer than the Steam Machine for $3000, even at today's absurd component prices. I'm not quite sure which is more moronic, trying to scalp a Steam Machine for that price or somebody actually paying it.

[–] DaddleDew@lemmy.world 93 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Scalpers are low lifes who don't necessarily know much about the products they scalp. They must have thought it was going to be the same as the last few generations of gaming console releases.

I also believe that the typical potential customer for a Steam Machine will know better.

[–] dudeface@lemmy.world 43 points 6 days ago

I’ll always remember going to a rise against concert and scalpers outside were saying “tickets for rise against the machine”, they have no idea what they are selling

Apparently you can get those listings easily removed by reporting them that the seller sells an "intangible item". Which is true, since a reservation is indeed not a tangible item.

If you spend US$3,000 on the Steam Machine your brain must be made of tofu.

[–] luipaard0011@lemmy.zip 29 points 6 days ago (1 children)

full of protein? tell me where! I would switch to eat brains of tofu in a blink

Why would anyone spend 3x the already too much for a steam machine?

Its not like they locked the os or even think the price is good. Who needs one of these this bad?

[–] hperrin@lemmy.ca 60 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Why? It’s not even that compelling at the normal price. If it were 3x the price, who would possibly want to buy it?

[–] rafoix@lemmy.zip 70 points 6 days ago (1 children)

The people that bought spacex stock.

For $2000, there are pre-built mini PCs with AMD iGPUs that will run circles around the Steam Machine. Just buy one of those and install Bazzite.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 11 points 5 days ago

Or install Steam OS if you want the closest approximation of a steam machine.

(Like them or not) LTT already showed how to do that last week.

[–] bridgeburner@lemmy.world 28 points 6 days ago (6 children)

Scalpers are the proof that a lot of humans are dumb af. Scalpers wouldn't exist if the vast majority humans were capable of using their brain.

[–] UnfortunateShort@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

Especially considering that is makes zero sense to pay extra, since you can literally go out and buy any other computer instead.

Just need to install Steam OS after

Scalping only worth it if people will pay it. Are people actually going to pay that price?

If you wanted one so badly, you probably got into the prenotation lottery. In the case you couldn't get one, you were put in the prenotation queue meaning that you'll be probably in for the next wave that shouldn't take too long to happen.

So who are they selling these to? These scalpers are not the sharpest tools of the shed. But buying one at that price is not much better. You must be a special kind of moron to buy that.

[–] dustyData@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I know it's not the intended audience of scalpers. They aim for the people with too much money and fomo. But just remember that scalpers are the only way that the global south will ever get access to this hardware. Valve won't sell me this computer, I get zero access to the lottery, they won't ship to my country. But a random scalper on eBay will, without hesitation.

I don't like consoles, but for contrast, I could go to my nearest mall and buy any current console in a brick and mortar store for a reasonable price, just a bit over the us dollar cost.

I know there's probably a lot of price fixating cartels for a bunch of hardware stuff. Valve is fighting a losing battle in a space the have zero reputation. But at the same time, scalping, much like piracy, is a service problem. It's the result of a poor and fragile supply chain and not enough marketing and commerce channels available.

Despite all the measures to deter scalping used on the steam controller, for example, which I think are fine. The fact that 80% of the planet can't buy it directly from valve means that there will always be a scalping market. Even today the original LCD steam deck with the small ssd sells on eBay for absurd prices. It's not a healthy second hand market or a bunch of people with desperate FOMO, the original deck is old news already. It's people using the only purchase means available.

[–] Eezyville@sh.itjust.works 4 points 5 days ago

It will be sold out in hours.

[–] rants_unnecessarily@piefed.social 29 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Who TF is buying it at that price?!

[–] Zacryon@feddit.org 20 points 6 days ago

Pro tip: don't buy obviously overpriced scalper shit.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 10 points 5 days ago

Why? They can only have one unit, just don't buy it off of them. End of problem.

[–] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 17 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Valve should make a false initial sale then "run out" causing scalpers to stock up then all of a sudden "find" a bunch of extra stock to start selling immediately after the first batch runs out.

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 13 points 6 days ago

That would require having enough inventory to meet total demand at the set price.

IMO the best they can do is cut the scalpers out by starting the price off high themselves and lowering it as supply increases. Low supply and high demand will always lead to increased prices and trying to avoid that by keeping prices low will result in others taking advantage of that market inefficiency.

And the best we can do is just not buy the higher priced options and wait for supply to come up.

[–] Hxrmit@thelemmy.club 7 points 5 days ago

Hot take: You don't have to buy an overpriced cube, just get a used laptop that's 5 years old atmost, it can handle most of the games and you can play them on the go

[–] artyom@piefed.social 16 points 6 days ago

Valve's efforts were never supposed to stop the scalping, only mitigate it.

[–] chunkystyles@sopuli.xyz 13 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Doesn't mean anyone is buying. Let me know when they actually get sold.

[–] Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 6 days ago (4 children)

They are being sold for that (or close)...Ebay Germany

Hmm maybe I should start selling SteamOS usb sticks with auto install script.

[–] Mistiygirl@lemmy.zip 15 points 6 days ago (1 children)

what??? I thought it's not even for sale yet?

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 41 points 6 days ago (8 children)

Correct. They're not even selling you a physical machine at that price. They're just allegedly selling you their place in the preorder lottery for the opportunity to buy one.

I can't imagine how anyone could possibly be that desperate.

[–] Pika@sh.itjust.works 13 points 6 days ago

I'm surprised that eBay even allows them to because I think that breaks their seller guidelines. I'm pretty sure merchandise that you don't physically have on hand You must clearly mark as I don't have this and as a pre-order and any pre-order is required to be shipped out within 40 days of the sale happening.

I can't imagine anyone on eBay is able to actually confirm they'll have it in 40 days
