"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

I've been noticing a lot of event flyers with KEY information missing, like dates, costs, locations, etc.

I'm almost certain all these flyers are AI generated.

Here goes the process when you are creating a flyer like an old fuddy-duddy that knows how to connect to a 300 baud modem by whistling:

  1. You write all the key information down in a document.
  2. You double check all the key information in the document.
  3. You format and add graphics.
  4. Print.

But when you're using AI it's:

  1. Tell AI to create you a flyer with some information you type in randomly to see what it looks like.
  2. AI generates a flyer that looks pretty damn professional to you.
  3. Print without proof-reading or checking for complete information.

A second thing I noticed is AI-generated with BLANK spaces that you fill in with a pen before copying. What the fuck is that? You have a fucking billion dollar machine boiling a gallon of water so you don't have to write anything; why are you using a pen?

I swear to God, my boss made an Independence Day Barbecue Flyer using AI with

Location:_________ Date:___________ Cost:__________

printed and then filled in by hand.

Of course a work 4th of July Party isn't on a Saturday, so the big top banner says 4th OF JULY PICNIC and then he's scrawled in "Date: 7/2" and it all just makes no sense.

Today a buddy invited me to his Fourth of July Party with a text message JPEG flyer. Listed were the start of dinner, start of dancing, and start of fireworks, and the address. But when do I show up? Not listed.

Ugh.

Hate to break it to you, but that sort of shit has been common long before AI got big.

I'm sure it's made it worse, and I can't say I ever got a PNG flyer sent to me by a friend for a get together that wasn't wedding or graduation related, but I've seen plenty like what you described over the years.

But back then flyers were adorned with glorious clip art and dubious font choices like papyrus

Uh. I guess send your AI assistant to attend the event? 😅

Man I read this as “air fryers” and I was super hyped to read a tirade on air fryers.

AI disappointing me yet again.

I don't have one; can't justify the space they take on the counter.

I think it's like one of those gadgets for people that think they're going to get delicious french fries without the grease. Like juicers, hot air popcorn poppers, and the ubiquitous George Foreman grill, I expect them to be littering thrift stores in the coming decade.

Now an Instapot I do kinda want--it's a pressure cooker AND a slow cooker AND a rice cooker.

I’ve got an instant pot and it’s amazing. Would recommend.

You have to pay to attend your own company's 4th of July party?

Late stage capitalist bosses have real senses of entitlement.

Let them fail, or figure it out themselves. This is natural selection at work.

AI is giving stupid people a big force multiplier on their stupid.

We've got one event happening this week.

2 flyers generated/circulated, with 2 different event start and finish times. 🫤

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Your boss did that so he can reuse it every year without consulting AI.

Like a downloadable template?

That's like using your car to drive your laundry from the bedroom to the washing machine.

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm assuming the AI gave him a PDF. Not an image you right click and save, but even then yeah. I dont think he printed the screen and left it perishable. Let's hate AI sure, but at least think because thats actually not an idiotic thing to do for shit not too many people give a fuck about. I would have made it in paint but to each their own.

The line divider indicatss a change of subject. There are two flyers.

And, yeah, this one of the more minor reasons to hate on AI, but it reflects a certain lack of accountability that AI on enables.

Is this post written by a chat bot or did you just format it to look like it was? Either way, not great choices if you ask me.

Shitty flyers have always existed. A lot of humans are no better at this than the machines.

I say good day to you, sir.
