Be nice. Assume others have good intent (within reason).

Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Edit: For context, @db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com discovered that the developer of Tesseract had discretely banned numerous instances and disguised it as a server error. This included more heavily leftist instances, but also blahaj.zone. More recently, it was discovered that they had also been suppressing individual users, phrases, and communities that criticize power tripping on fedi.

Needless to say, I implore non blahaj.zone users to drop the Tesseract client (support for the client has already been dropped for blahaj). So called "liberals" like this who call out "extremism on both sides" are an insult to the values they claim to be upholding.

I'm banned and honestly I get that, but what the hell did the WholesomeYuri sub ever do to this guy?

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yuri is gay. I think this guy hates gay people.

I'm happy with the consolation prize, my communities made it to the list. Here I thought they were too small for anyone to give a damn.

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 13 points 1 week ago

I didn't make the list, but the instance I admin did, so I guess the liberals fear Me.

[–] psycotica0@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Wait, aren't you a blahaj user? Doesn't that mean they didn't need to block you because they already blocked that whole server you rode in on?

Or did I misunderstand your comment...

[–] fernsong582@lemmy.ca 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The dev has such a grudge that not only will they block instances, but doubly ban specific users. Like a "eff this person in particular." They apparently blacklist linktr.ee links? And "🥺?👉👈". Like there's actual bots and spam but posts with "Hi, I'm an AI engineer based in Japan" are blacklisted.

I'm honored to be on it, and surprised you aren't

[–] not_IO@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 1 week ago (3 children)

didn't they ban all of blahaj? so we can feel accomplished

[–] hildegarde@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They banned blahaj on the blacklist in the code, but tesseract also loads a secret ban list from his server that includes individual user accounts and regex for hiding those with accounts on multiple instances.

The reality is anyone could have checked and found this the whole time. But if its easy to check, no one does. Bystander effect an'at.

[–] TotallynotJessica@lemmy.blahaj.zone 15 points 1 week ago (2 children)

It was definitely not meant to be found, even if they claim otherwise.

I'm happy to see this blowing up. Hopefully more people become aware of this developer's disgusting behavior, and either don't use Tesseract at all, or contribute to db0's fork to help keep it afloat. Since he's been talking about getting rid of it completely after Lemmy 1.0

[–] PDFuego@aussie.zone 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Is it because I once said I hope Gina Rinehart's entire family spontaneously combusts? Because I stand by that.

Can't even say you want billionaires to die without libs getting all butthurt, smh. Do they not realize that the rich are responsible for making me scared of getting disappeared by the Gestapo? I'm afraid for my life thanks to them supporting Trump, but these pieces of shit want to tone police my fears into non existence. Them banning a handful of maga instances doesn't change the fact that they're helping those very people.

[–] yetAnotherUser@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Don't worry, TotallyNotJessica. It's possible you don't interact in the same communities the dev does, and I think that's the reason you aren't in the blacklist.

(Removed unnecessary P.S. comment)

It's weird.

Violet08 is banned while femcelmemes is not. Blahaj is banned while TotallyNotJessica is not.

Do they have inverted criteria for communities and users? What are the criterias? Will someone please tell me how do I get on this list!?

Making it to the secret Tesseract blacklist may be my biggest accomplishment in life so far

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (6 children)

wait where can I find that list? am I in it?..

EDIT: okay alright y'all can stop responding now...

[–] hildegarde@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (9 children)

Info about downloading the secret block list is in this thread in blahaj announcements.

I did check and you are not in it, but several other blahaj regulars are.

Since it's opensource, is there any way I can add myself to the list?

[–] psycotica0@lemmy.ca 14 points 1 week ago

Turns out the open source code was downloading a list of patterns from a hard-coded server path on load. So that file can't be edited by you. But you could write a patch to change the path to a different file you edited to block yourself!

I made the list! I'm just finding this out now, I'm not familar with tesseract though or how it exactly works, does that mean the reason I cant use oldsh.itjust.works old reddit style layout because of this? I've been having issues with loading posts using oldsh.itjust.works, so maybe this is why!
