It didn't catch students who used AI. It caught students who didn't proof read their work after AI drafted it.
At least using AI but proofreading and fixing AI's mistakes uses your human brain to some degree. If they must use AI I'd rather they be smart enough to comprehend what it puts out and do at least some critical thinking of their own.

91% Of students not only cheating with AI. But 91% being so unaware and unengaged that they're not even checking the work or the answers.

This isn't fair. Madagascar is 592,800 square kilometres. You shouldn't discriminate against prompt engineers in their studies before they've even had a chance to take those future-skills into the workforce. In 2024, Madagascar was estimated to have 32m residents. The professor should be ashamed.
If I were a professor in this day and age, every exam would have an oral component. If it's a class that has a large group of people, then I'd have my TA's run oral exams with small groups separately.
Oral isn't necessary and can overwhelm even very smart and knowledgeable students.
Just require all work is turned in handwritten. Tests are also done handwritten.
That's it. It's impossible to not absorb the stupidity of AI if you at least have to handwrite the answer.
It's impossible to copy/paste an answer into a test if it's handwritten.
The only thing stopping this is that teachers are used to the convenience of computer submitted work, remote learning, and disability workarounds.
By the way: Cheating was always possible by the privileged...
If you get a grade for you essay and have intelligent people in your family, why wouldn't you ask them?
But at this point, everyone can do it.
