I've been delivering through my province and collecting roadside diners to visit on days off. The last restaurant I checked the one star reviews and the first one said the "coleslaw was boring". There was also a three star review that said it was closed so they couldn't eat there... what?

My go-to example is an inverter I got for my drill batteries. It's a box that plugs into my 20V drill batteries with a couple USB ports and a 110V wall outlet on top. It can produce 150 watts maximum from that socket. The reviews for this device are split between 4 and 5 star reviews from people who know what that means, and 1 star reviews from people who don't. "Won't run my air fryer. Would rate 0 stars if I could."

Or: ★ I tried to use this knife as a fork and it didn't work.

Or some other dumb shit where you wonder how that person is even able to live.

The amount of times i do this, usually the 1* reviews are all "this replacement part didnt fit my [machine]" or something similar. Usually its just the end user admitting they ordered the wrong thing, and cant take acknowledge theyre the ones who made a mistake

I recently took family to a beach vacation, and I looked up reviews for the beach and read the 1-stars. One of them was a 1- star review because, reason given, the beach was cold. That reason for a one-star is worth at least ten five-star reviews.

Absolutely. Sometimes the two and three stars are useful, people tend to write more nuanced reviews about what went wrong or other issues with whatever is being reviewed. You might also find someone who has taken the time to find a fix if there is one, or suggest a possible alternative product that does the job. One stars are usually “this (thing) sucks because (reasons) and I’d give it negative stars if I could!”

1st review: looks great on our Christmas tree, just what we needed.

Restaurant opened up in town, we went in the first week, service was horrible, like unbelievably so, and not just to me. It's a long story.

I get it, new business has growing pains. But it was bad enough I needed to leave a bad review. My plan was to update it if/when we came back and it was better. Or if the business commented on it apologizing for the way we were treated.

Instead, I watched that place get like 30 5 star reviews in an hour flat. And I don't mean several good reviews, with a mix of stars and praise. I mean 30 solid 5 stars, with ALL the subcategories lit up with solid 5 stars as well, and glowing, wordy reviews.

No way. Absolutely no way could that be the case. I talked to other friends who went on different days, they had better experiences than me, but they all had different issues, nobody was giving a glowing review. One other buddy also got snubbed the same way I did and left a 1 star as well.

Funny thing? All the one star reviews had hearts on them, almost like people were trying to boost them up in the sea of 5 star reviews.

It was the craziest thing I'd ever seen. That company saw the 1 stars rolling in, and instead of replying to them, or training their staff, they just... Bought reviews, to keep their ratio high and weather the storm.

Just insane.
