When you see shit like this, you KNOW, they knew the shit was bad bit didn't want to lose profit.

Human history can be summed up in two words: unintended consequences.
After seeing this happen with so many other things, it's hard to think of the corporation as a hapless victim of chance.
I think that you're right to assume that corporations do not give a fuck beyond profit. I think you're wrong to assume that they somehow 'knew'. Occam's Razor dictates that they likely didn't.

Oh no, they knew plastics were bad news. They invented recycling to shift the conversation to consumers and now our entire planet is blanketed with it.
I mean, they're not wrong. But maybe we shouldn't expect to eat any kind of food at any time of the year from any place in the world...
Or your favorite niche flavor of dorito in the corner store at 2am Sunday morning. This is what I mean when I say that while yes most ecological damage is caused by large corporations, there would still also have to be fundamental changes to a huge number of people's everyday lives. Convenience culture would have to die and I don't even know if I'm personally ready for that.
It's not just convenience alone. Plastic over soil reduces the use of water and energy. Plastic in packing and shipping even in-season local produce extends its life and reduces waste, can help keep things sanitary/safer longer.
We use plastic not just because it's cheap (even though it is), but also because it's really easy to form impermeable barriers for water/moisture, air, contaminants, microbes (both wanted and unwanted). We can debate whether those uses are worth the ecological or even health cost, but we have to acknowledge that refusing to use plastic also carries a cost, too.
