Tell that to my gut. You get onions in there, mushrooms, etc I'll be absolutely crippled with cramps, gas, and worse.

I'm glad people love onions. I don't even mind the taste. But you know what I like more? NOT being stuck in agony on the toilet for hours.

IBS? SIBO? Any other diagnose?

[–] m3t00@lemmy.world 10 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 1 points 3 minutes ago

I know the cilantro example is famous, but as a super taster and having other people with the gene onions are very divisive. For me, anything more than a hint is overpoweringly disgusting and the idea of actually biting into one directly fills me with dread.

Onion powder and garlic powder are both very preferable to the actual substance taste wise.

If you know someone in your life that really likes diet soda and other artificially sweetened things and even prefers it to the regular, they just might be a super taster.

If you know someone that finds wine, beer, tea and coffee horrifically bitter to the point that they can't even understand how you enjoy it. They may also be a super taster.

If you know someone that complains Seltzer's like white claw and lacroix are absurdly bitter and completely disgusting. That is likely because they can taste a profile called bitter two, which is prevalent in these things because they are a super taster.

I know nobody will read this and learn to quit bitching at people about what they like, but I figured I'd at least try.

Now that I'm done being reasonable:

Why don't you stop pussyfooting around with weak bitch shit like onions and actually use some real fucking spices from India and Mexico? Onions are for mayo loving losers afraid of burning their tender tongues, miss me with that shit.

[–] porous_grey_matter@lemmy.ml 1 points 38 minutes ago

Indian food uses loads of onions

[–] Echolynx@lemmy.zip 3 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (1 children)

What if I love plain sparkling water, black (loose) tea, dark chocolate, unsweetened espresso? Enjoy the taste of plain (real, not American) bread with olive oil or butter on its own? Hate food spicier than butter chicken?

Am I a super taster or the opposite? I joke that I have the palate of a medieval peasant, though I'm guessing they wouldn't have enjoyed dark chocolate or undiluted coffee/tea.

[–] KuroiKaze@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Opposite of me in almost every way lol def not a super taster

[–] Echolynx@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Lol being a super taster would be hell for me if I already feel so sensitive to taste/scent.

[–] KuroiKaze@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

Yeah I don't love it sounds like a super power when all it does is make you not like popular stuff for the most part. There is however one upside which is when I eat something truly good my soul leaves my body and I fall through space and time. I call it a taste journey. Have to be vigilant to not get super fat haha.

shit like onions and actually use some real fucking spices from India and Mexico

... but... India eats a lot of onions... because as great as the spices are, onions are also great. You can have both. You should have both.

How are you for Mushrooms? Also a supertaster and I just cannot understand how anyone can eat them - they're so oppressively fungal.

Them and Jalapenos (nearly all pungent peppers in fact) are the two people always pull the "HoW cAn'T yOu LiKe It It'S sO gOoD!!" reaction with me...

[–] KuroiKaze@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago

Canned sliced button mushrooms are pretty easy to eat.

I mostly eat the fun kind of mushrooms which are very unpleasant to get down but worth the health benefits.

[–] 5318008@lemmy.ml 2 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (1 children)

For jalapeños and other peppers, the pithy center is where most of the pungency comes from. It's also more bitter than the rest of the pepper. If you chop into quarters lengthwise, it's easy to cut the seeds and pith away from the flesh. You're the left with a milder, sweeter result.

... in case you're in an experimental mood.

[–] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

I appreciate the suggestion!

It's not the pungency that's an issue though, but the flavor of the pepper itself - it absolutely overwhelms every other ingredient in the dish with a quite unpleasant flavor, even when pith, seeds and ends have been removed. The same is true of bell peppers, though I find them less overpoweringly strong flavored. There are a few varieties that don't do it - Pequin peppers are quite munchable, as are bird's eyes, but the staple 'spicy' peppers in the US (ancho, jalapeno, habanero, poblano, aleppo, cayenne, tobasco, chipotle, etc) all unfortunately fall under the heading of "blechy" for me....

[–] dewritoninja@pawb.social 12 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I didn't like onions as a kid, turns out my mother just sucks at cooking.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 5 points 15 hours ago

I thought my parents' cooking was great, until I grew up and started cooking myself, and discovered I had a talent for it. Now I realize my parents couldn't cook at all.

Now life is reversed, and I'm taking care of my Mom (Dad's gone), and I do ALL the cooking.

I still despise onions though. That wasn't my Mom's cooking, I just despise onions. And green peppers.

It isn't about growing up, onions just taste terrible to some people, the way cilantro or asparagus tastes bad to some. I know a guy who is fine with onions, but feels the way I feel toward them about CUCUMBERS, of all things. They basically taste like water, but he can't stand to be in the same room with one.

I always liked onions in things. In fact I liked all things kids were supposed to hate... Except for eggplant. I just don't like eggplant.

[–] kuiskaaja@lemmy.ml 3 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

i once got in trouble at school for putting too much broccoli on my plate

[–] ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)
[–] kuiskaaja@lemmy.ml 2 points 12 hours ago

yeah the teacher raised her voice and told me i should leave some for others (only like a quarter of my plate was broccoli and i only took one plate of food and u know... broccoli isn't the most popular thing out there)

she was a substitute teacher when our teacher was sick and was a bit weird in general. after her shifts at our class, she was never a substitute teacher for our class again so after she was gone i kept going as usual and nobody complained ever again xD

this was somewhere around grade 3 to 6, probably 4th or 5th

[–] BigDiction@lemmy.world 11 points 20 hours ago (3 children)

There has always been a lot of poorly cooked eggplant going around. It has a ton moisture that needs to be drawn out through salt and/or roasting and frying to make it not be mushy.

Cooked properly crispy it can be delicious.

[–] mirshafie@europe.pub 1 points 10 hours ago

Remove skin. Slice. Cook on medium heat until most moisture has been drawn out. Add olive oil, salt, black pepper and tomato paste. Serve with rice and grilled meat.

[–] rbos@lemmy.ca 3 points 16 hours ago

It also absorbs oil like crazy, so you have to be careful and when and how you introduce fats.
