Fuck AI

"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

Gosh, who would've thought people would hate having their water sources depleted and their electric bill go thru the roof! Who wouldn't want a worthless data center into their neighborhood?

And have new computers be made unaffordable.

And 25% unemployment

"Stunned the tech industry"... I'm in the tech industry and we all hate how LLMs are being used.

I wish the hate was more widespread, I also work in the tech industry and there are plenty of people who i have to work with who have given themselves up completely to having Claude do everything for them. I have never been so frustrated not only trying to keep up but also fixing problems overlooked by LLMs and then absorbing LLM generated responses to pr reviews or to why something broke in production

My favourite new term for those people is 'meat proxy'.

Meat proxy (noun): “A person who forwards AI-generated text, code, or other output without reading, understanding, or validating it. The person acts only as a relay between the AI system and the intended recipient.”

I've come to the conclusion that this is just the tech industry in general, not just AI. It's been deeply unserious for a while now, cutting corners, throwing ethics out the window, just trying to get rich quick. But for the most part, they had to pretend to be serious people. Now AI is giving them a reason to give up the pretense and go mask off.

there used to be enough senior engineers to reign them in most of the time, but now they can just out-shit the serious engineers who can't keep up with all the shit, and management's obsession with AI is giving them the free pass to get away with it.

I think it really started some time around 2010, when the promise of easy money as a software engineer started attracting more people that do not really care for the craft, just to earn well while phoning it in with an easy desk job*. And AI really empowers that crowd.

*not saying this is necessarily wrong given that a lot of tech companies suck and if you leech off of them, well, more power to you. But it does not make it fun to work with those kinds of coworkers.

They'll keep building them, but they'll try to keep the stories from appearing. Reports of discontent will be stifled.

It's the other way around - they're talking about building a lot more data centers than they're actually building, to convince investors that AI is actually going to make 10x the revenue in three years.

Where is that revenue going to come from? Which companies are looking to quadruple their IT budget? Where are all the consumers with a ton of disposable income? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

"Thank God for Mark", said a political operative??

Zuckerberg has been a punchline at best and a villain at worst for decades now.

If you want people to hate and distrust something, make Mark Zuckerberg the public face of that thing.

And, he deleted the post after a week or so, because of the backlash and ridicule.

Thank God for Mark Zuckerberg!

Democracy and billionaires are not compatible systems

Great, zuck with the "sell out your children's community for cash right now" fund.

Software engineer here. Fuck your datacenters and most things called "AI". If you want to run some local models on ethically-sourced training data, I've got no problem with that. Else, no.

[–] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Software engineer here.

Else, no.

Story checks out.

If Mark Zuckerberg is your savior, you are in some serious trouble.

[–] axx@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Yeah, saying "thank God for" one of the most obviously morally bankrupt characters of our modern age is such an indictment.

Goes to show how psychopathicly immoral they are
