I don’t know how “lunatic” this is. But this was an ad I just saw pop up, which is an amazing slap in the face to everyone who has worked for that title.

I got one of those from the Universal Life Church 20 years ago when I became a minister. Mostly just so I could randomly say "Well what would I know, I'm just a DOCTOR."

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 31 points 1 week ago (1 children)

When I got mine through them and the Church of the SubGenius it was Doktor of Forbidden Sciences iirc

Wish I still had that card

Very strange…

[–] gramie@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

That was only a master's degree.

[–] greenbit@lemmy.zip 15 points 1 week ago

Oh they did doctorates as well. Iirc I'm just a pastor

Similar story here, but not that long ago. Got my doctorate in geopsychology from Abide University not long after becoming an ordained dudeist priest.

TIL There exists The Book of Duderonomy.

This must be where my Doctor got his honorary medical degree. He's the the worst, all he ever does is draw my blood from my neck. Do not go see "Dr." Akula.

Just curious, have you ever seen this guy outside during the day?

[–] ramble81@lemmy.zip 20 points 1 week ago

Outside in the day? Hell, I can’t even see him in the mirror.

At least quote the person whose joke you have butchered.

[–] Godric@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

At least mention the person whose joke they butchered!

Sloppy execution, but Mitch Hedberg jokes always give me a chuckle.

I still have intestinal troubles from my time in PhD. And I don't even use the title…

[–] Thorry@feddit.org 13 points 1 week ago

Having worked with many people with PhD degrees, I've noticed the ones that actually use their title are often the least knowledgeable and least likeable of the bunch. Most folk just assume everyone is qualified, with or without using the title, until proven otherwise by opening their mouths. There was this one dude who had 3 PhDs and literally wrote the book on some stuff, he was the most chill dude ever and said: "Just call me Robert, that's my name". Whilst this other dude insisted on being called Dr. Jenkins was an absolute idiot of a man. He would be often wrong and always challenged everyone and every thing. Of course the higher ups liked him, because of how he presented himself. But everyone else hated him. And I later found out his PhD wasn't even directly related to the field he works in.

My PhD (pretty heavy drinking) gives me intestinal issues too.

[–] thesohoriots@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I still don’t sleep. The stress is very real.

Thank you, compañero.

Our head of school was brought in from the outside to "help navigate the new challenges in academia" (I.e. to make cuts). They hold the title "professor" (which outranks doctor by quite a bit).

During one of those awkward "get to know you" talks I just asked what her research speciality was (common icebreaker among academics); turns out she wasn't a researcher, had never done a PhD, and had gotten the job on managerial experience.

In cases like this, the joke is that "oh, so the chair is the professor" (it's common to become a professor when head of school, you lose the title when your rotation is over); in cases like the OP it should transfer to "oh, so your wallet is the doctor".

Interesting that they don’t have a German or Swiss flag there. From what I understand, claiming a doctorate that’s not completely above-board (even if it’s legal) is a career-ending move there.

[–] DaTingGoBrrr@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago

Same in Sweden and other serious countries

Interested. Dr.(H.C.) sounds like doctor hardcore, which is much more hardcore than ordinary doctor.

[–] marlowe221@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I have a JD. The degree you get from law school, at least here in the US.

The “D” literally stands for “doctor”… no one ever calls you doctor though.

Not that I use the degree any more. I work in IT now!

[–] Sylvartas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 week ago

And I have a master's degree but no one calls me "Master".

Actually, back in the 90s we had a baby sitter that was quite old school and insisted on calling my dad "Doctor" (he has a PhD in materials science).

[–] ToastedRavioli@midwest.social 6 points 1 week ago

JDs may not get called doctor, but at least they can get called esquire which sounds way cooler. Like some kind of spy or something

[–] bizarroland@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] ramble81@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

Cock sucker… err, Doc sucker.

[–] IzzyScissor@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

I have one that a previous boss bought for me. I only use it when talking to religious fanatics who got their doctorate in religious studies to tell them I'm also a doctor and they can fuck off. Feels like stolen valor otherwise.
