Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

They think gay stuff is like crack, once you get exposed to it you'll be addicted and there's no going back.

There's some truth to that, but only for a certain percent of the population. The rest are immune. We have a word for people in that "vulnerable" category, and the word is gay. So unless you're gay there's no need to worry about it. Worrying about gay stuff turning you gay is gay af

I wish this was their logic.

What they fear is that they are wrong about sexual orientation being a choice. So if their child was never exposed to anything gay, they then can act straight and be quietly depressed about why other people aren't like them.

Not even that far. It's about "purity". Heterosexuality, manliness, virginity, whatever they associated with purity is extremely fragile and mere mention of any "impurity" may sully it, because the more pure you are the more bragging rights you have.

In islamist circles for example, some are obsessed with drinking from cups no alcohol has touched.

Usually because the worst anti gay of them are indeed tempted because they're closet gay and think the rest of humanity feels the same way.

I really can't understand why they are so hung up about this. Just suck some cock, it's fun!

I've questioned my brother in law on this as he acts this way. Instead of any epiphany on his part, I made a reference to watching black people on tv not making a white person black which led him to come up with the dumbest and racist take of all black people having some frontal lobe defect? I have zero clue where he came up with this but I suspect whatever braindead source for his anti gay rhetoric is also pushing the anti non white rhetoric. He also argued from the point of someone who was regurgitating information he half understood instead of a point he'd actually thought about

Almost certainly. I followed right wing media for quite a few years (a good amount of them were by proxy, thankfully) and the anti gay/PoC/women narratives were all mixed together more often than not.

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 4 points 4 hours ago

That analogy was never going to work on anyone though...

[–] bufalo1973@piefed.social 4 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

That shit comes from phrenology.

[–] chunk6235@piefed.social 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Nah, this is just basic biological racism. It wouldn't be phrenology until they were making arguments that the shape or the lumps on his head made him stupid/insane/an insatiable raping machine/some other dumb bullshit.

Somehow, biological racism isn't nearly as stupid as phrenology.

You got it wrong. You have to show the kid two women kissing so it balances out to zero (as you have 2 men and 2 women). If you show them a man and a woman, they're still 2 men up so they're gonna stay gay.

It's basic maths, you should know that!

[–] spujb@lemmy.cafe 36 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

secure two children back to back on a rotor, alternating showing each a gay kiss picture then a straight kiss picture

the resulting forces of attraction have created a perpetual motion machine, at the low low cost of two children and your ethical-moral compass

[–] frostlytt@lemmy.blahaj.zone 25 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

wow! my coal mines use WAY more children than that, so this is a huge efficiency boost for me! /j

[–] Susaga@sh.itjust.works 13 points 3 hours ago

Just got word, the coal industry does not want a new, more efficient fuel source to appear, so they're ending gay porn.

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 3 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Why assume straight porn is as potent as gay porn?

Rhetorical but homophobes don't think that way. If you think being gay is some kind of aberration the way people think paedophilia is, you might think about gay porn, or positive gay characters in books, as showing that being gay is ok, leading to more people doing it.

[–] SalmiakDragon@feddit.nu 3 points 4 hours ago

You're right. Nobody mentioned anything constituting "porn" though - I think just "content" or "representation" is a better word choice.
