The old ones were also ai. There is no voice assistant without transformer models, that's what they are. The old ones were better because they were trained only for that task and Google has gotten lazy, slapping in a model that is way more tuned to helping you summarise emails and product comparisons than actually doing phone related things.
Like under your third dupe comment, LLMs vs AST. The old assistants were rather ASTs than LLMs.
ASTs are transformer models. I never said they were LLMs.
You don't need that. Use your brain. Type with your keyboard! Write stuff down! Don't use Speakwrite to be lazy!

When I am driving a car and then next rest stop is 15 km away, then it is convenience to tell a voice to text tool to punch in an address in my on board navigation.
Shit is for android auto mostly.
