"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

Disbarred at a minimum.

Let me know when they go to jail.

Good God. I mean using AI for a brief is one thing, despicable enough, but using AI fabricated testimony should absolutely be grounds for disbarment. At minimum a count of contempt for every instance of fabricated testimony.

Worse: it shows that he didn't study the original case. He tossed it all in ChatGPT and assumed that it's output was correct.

Fined? How about throwing his case out of court? Disbarring him?

You didn't read the article.

He's being referred to a disciplinary committee. He will probably get a suspension for a period.

Also why should the defendant of the case have the case thrown out because of the attorney's conduct?

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Because they hired that attorney? They should have to start over and hire a different attorney. They can sue the original attorney if they didn’t know anything about the deception.

lol, you: he should have to suffer grave criminal punishment because his lawyer showed a lack of ethical behavior

You really have not thought this through

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml -3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Starting over because you had flawed representation is hardly a punishment.

He should start over because he can hire someone who is actually competent this time. It's basically a do-over.

You really understand nothing but act so confidently. Learn to experience empathy and read deeply into subjects before commenting. You know, like Chairman Mao says to do.

I think someone who hires a shitty lawyer should get a do-over. What's wrong with that?

So your solution is that he doesn't get a second chance?

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Why is it my responsibility to remake the legal system? What is you plan to make it more just?

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml -2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Giving him a second chance makes it more just!

And he can sue his bad lawyer for bad representation too, since this is legal malpractice.

But you seem to want... what? That he doesn't get a second chance? He's just fucked?

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I don’t want anything. That’s a strange assertion.

The fact is that he has lost a ton of money here and the judges will be prejudiced against him. This is all the fault of the lawyer but the case will continue. Whatever damages he can get later he’s still fucked now and there’s nothing anyone can do about it.

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml -3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

And he can sue his own lawyer for bad representation. That's allowed.

Yet you seem to be against this, but are offering literally no alternative. Yeah, hiring a lawyer costs money. You know what costs more money? Being legally liable because your lawyer was disbarred for malpractice and you couldn't replace him!

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Where does he get another ten grand right now since there is a case still ongoing? Just think on that. /out

[–] hitmyspot@aussie.zone 4 points 2 weeks ago

It doesn't seem like that would be fair for his client. Fine the lawyer, or hold them in contempt. That's how it's supposed to work. If it continued or was a purposeful intent to mislead, rather than carelessness, then, certainly refer to bar or jail.

Rules about ai need to catch up. Until people in general are more familiar with hallucinations and lack if hehe I in AI, it wouldn't be just to hold people more accountable for its failures beyond other tools. It should be treated the same, just as other misinformation and misleading statements have been in the past.

You have a convicted murderer who is now furious with you, Mr. Aarons. You can turn your focus from the bar association.
