Time enjoyed is not time wasted.

[–] AmyAye@nord.pub 16 points 2 days ago

I am mid 40s and still do all that fun stuff. One thing worth learning as you get older, who gives a shit what others do or what their opinion of you is. If they want to be a boring stick in the mud, crabbing at everything, probably also a miserable alcoholic, let them. Play your games, buy dumb shit, enjoy what you want.

[–] architect@thelemmy.club 8 points 2 days ago

Lots of wasted time on things people don’t enjoy and I’m talking things like video games. Make sure you actually enjoy them and aren’t just doing it because your friends are/that’s what you’ve always done.

NOOOO WORK AND OBLIGATIONS IS WHAT DEFINES THE MEANING OF LIFE!

[–] fushuan@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 1 day ago

If by grown stuff you mean work, taxes, chores... You can do whatever you want afterwards, you earned it.

That's what grown up stuff is, responsibilities.

[–] jjlinux@lemmy.zip 51 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Still happening to me at 52 years old. Fuck growing up.

I live how, when my wife has to leave the city for a day or more, my kid's reaction is, invariably, "yeah! There won't be any adults in the house." 🤣

[–] chunk6235@piefed.social 23 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I just do all that after I do the grown up stuff I have to do

[–] xylol@leminal.space 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You sound like some kind of modern human being that exists on earth

[–] epicstove@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

None of that is "childish".

You go to work like an adult, come home and:

Play an M rated video game Watch an adult oriented animated show/film, Watch YouTube video that reached about some complex topic that you have an interest in (science, history, etc) or a video of someone playing those aforementioned M rated games.

Live your life, have fun with it.

[–] RagingRobot@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I do this that and the other. All the things

[–] chaosCruiser@futurology.today 21 points 2 days ago (3 children)

You can still do all the fun stuff after work. Weekends exist too you know.

[–] kbobabob@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They already said they play video games, watch cartoons, youtube, & learn useless facts in their free time.

The thing is, you can do all of that. There's enough time for boring adult stuff and fun.

[–] Sc00ter@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Im at the point in my life where my children consume all of that. I get time after everyone in my house is asleep. Thankfully I function on 6.5 hours of sleep, so i can get some time

[–] GreyEyedGhost@piefed.ca 2 points 2 days ago

If you can function adequately on 5, there is another 1.5 hours of gaming time available.

Just kidding. Get the sleep you need so your brain will function well for longer and you can get those missed hours of fun back when your kids don't require all your attention.

[–] protist@retrofed.com 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't know how old your kids are, but I have my 8 year old playing Final Fantasy with me, and I'm playing Minecraft Dungeons with him

[–] Sc00ter@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh im totally here for all that. Id love to play more video games with my kids. Thats mostly their mom's choice that they enroll in musical theatre/tennis/tap dance/etc. and theres minimal unstructured time

They regularly ask if they can just stay home and play Lets Go Eevee or Mario Kart with me.

[–] protist@retrofed.com 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah my son gets one extracurricular at a time. It's too much for kids to fill their schedules like that. They need unstructured time and boredom

[–] Sc00ter@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Mines for multiple children, so when ones at event, the other parent is on full kid duty. I agree and I support bored kids

You can also combine kids and fun. You just need to be a bit creative.

[–] lolrightythen@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I thought weekends were the fum stuff after work

[–] chaosCruiser@futurology.today 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Who said you can't spend a few hours gaming during weekdays. Traditionally, people have spent those hours watching low quality trash on TV. Shooting space bugs with rockets and flame throwers is a lot more fun IMO.

[–] Obi@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 day ago

It's also way better for your brain. Just don't forget to take care of the body too.

Viewing things you enjoy as something you’re not allowed to do because you are an adult is easily the most childish thing you can do. Don’t live your life as though you are an animal trained to perform for others.

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 9 points 2 days ago

I don't think these are opposed concepts.

[–] Pacattack57@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

There are no useless facts. Only growing knowledge. You are a full time student for the rest of your life.

[–] Kraiden@piefed.social 4 points 1 day ago

The only thing that's childish is thinking your age means you have to stop doing the things you enjoy. I'm in my late 30's and you're basically describing my weekends. Well, the ones I actually have free that is. Sadly, responsibilities eat into that more and more the older you get. All the more reason to actually enjoy your free time when you have it

[–] IamMoonPie@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I feel this in my soul. I’m an adult in that I pay rent, feed my kid, etc. but I’m also overly traumatized by the world around me so I retreated into the same things that made me happy as a kid. Also, my brain is wholly convinced I’m 12 not 36.

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 7 points 2 days ago

goddamn right.

good luck with your kid though. guess climate change is their problem now.

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

If being an adult is having children and being married or even having a girlfriend (or whatever you like); then I'm good with just having a house, cars, hobbies, being able to travel, and endless entertainment.

[–] Stern@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (3 children)

They're busy cheering for grown folks playing different kids games, or playing less intense/more popular games like Farmville, Modern Warfare, GTA5, or whatev. They aren't getting their giggles from cartoons but from Modern Family or Young Sheldon. They are 100% doomscrolling.

Biggest difference is social acceptability.

[–] OmegaMouse@pawb.social 9 points 2 days ago

Those damn kids on their Nintendos! They should be enjoying proper content like the intellectual cartoons I enjoy, 10 hour video essays, and browsing Lemmy!

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

True.

In my case, the self proclaimed "grown up" people my age are busy:

  • taking hard drugs
  • binge drinking
  • not saving money, burning through parents cash
  • investing in literally "shitcoins" for the thrill of it then turning around to criticise people for playing videogames
  • binging on dopamine from vanity gym-ing
  • driving very fast sometimes under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • spamming AI generated slop images in Instagram groupchats
  • constantly cyver bullying each other (don't ask me to explain why)

GenZ has a having fun problem. When people take up normal healthy hobbies like climbing or knitting, the boomers and Gen-Xers at mainstream cable news publish stories ~~making fun of them~~ essentially decrying "have we failed them??"

We've ended up with part of the generation focused on their own survival, and the other part are busy chasing the traditional road-well-travelled that boomers set out; basically conversion therapy to bring them into the folds of thrill-seeking capitalist dictatorship. As with the Boomers before them, these Gen Zs believe they are being "rebellious" and "individualistic" when they go down this road.
