I can remember my first dick pic. I, 15, met some guy in his 30s in some yahoo chat room. I remember waiting so patiently to see what he looked like. As that's what I thought the photo was.
He told me he would buy me a plane ticket to see him.
How sweet.

A similar but also opposite experience in many ways: I vividly remember me and a friend (teenage boys, mid 90s) waiting for a picture of a naked lady on some website, slowly loading line by line. Took forever. Finally it failed when it got to her chest, just above the boobs we wanted to see 😢
I mentioned a meme I saw to a friend of mine and it turns out he doesn’t have social media at all. He just said “The mediocrity of it…” and we went back to talking about other stuff again.
He had a point.
Lemmy is the only social media I have, it’s a peaceful life.
YouTube is my other social media and it's getting stale quickly
I turned YouTube history off and just watch videos through “my subscriptions”
For me it’s a game changer
I basically did the same thing but have a YouTube downloader that puts them on my Plex server. So I can watch a show then like a YouTube video and call it a night
I wanted to set that up to for a while. But I don't have a home server, just a seedbox and it's limited in what I can do. What software are you using?
I'm using pinchflat on it. The trickiest part was just the naming scheme in pinchflat for the videos and the library configuration on plex so it shows them correctly.
Also I got blocked by YouTube a few times because I would pause it for a while then start it up and it would download way too many so they would block me for like a month

YouTube is still amazing, you just have to ignore the algorithm, which is easy enough through subscriptions
I was trying to find background music the other day while I did chores. Unless you know a specifc channel, there's a good chance your search takes you to Aimusic instead of music.

Why ignore the algorithm? Some of my favorite creators I found through the algorithm (suggested videos, homepage, etc). I just ignore the ones you don't like, you'll see less and less of them.
Example: A few weeks ago it tried to show me videos of Charlie Kirk, I marked them as boring and after 3 attempts it got the message and I haven't seen one since.
You're right about this, but getting it right can take some work. YouTube makes recommendations based on your watch history and input, so you have to go in and remove videos from your history you don't want to influence what you see. But a big problem IMO is that the algorithm recommends things only based on what you've watched recently, and not based on your subscriptions

I remember when there really weren't images because those were too slow to load.
Images loading pixel by pixel, line by line, took ages. I don't think I ever saw one full full-size photo for the first few years I was online.
Porn sites were a experience. I would load the first 1/6th of the image and be done. The rest was up to the imagination.
I was basically a crude LLM where I had to generate the rest of the image with minimal input.
I remember when we started getting images
I find it ironic and satisfying that the image link for your post is broken, and that's how, like, 99% of the images actually work.
I'm in jerboa, and if I click on the link/broken image symbol the image loads. I haven't checked web interface but I can later.
It's a quirk of some sites. Or using mp4, idk.
Remember buying a "yellow pages style" book of what websites you could go to and half of them didn't work? lol
Never had that, but I remember actually surfing the web of links between pages in the time before search engines.
All word of mouth back then, you would have a friend of a friend tell you about a website they visited. Then as soon as you got home you would pray you remembered the address as text-messaging was not a thing yet.
People were always asking, do you got any good websites when?
I'm old enough to remember when the World Wide Web was so new it had to use the full URL to differentiate itself from established services like Telnet and Gopher.

I remember watching the Netscape animation in excitement waiting for something cool to load in the browser window even if it was probably "under construction" 🚧
Haven't felt anything like that sitting in front of a computer in a very long time.
