Why don't these shower-phone people just get a much cheaper and more durable waterproof speaker? I get wanting music or a podcast or whatever but I can't imagine how I would watch a video with all the soap and water everywhere

Is this the same for baths?

Although water temperature for my bath is hotter than for my showers, it seems to me less steam comes off a bath.

In the actual shower, where the water is? Who does that?

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 12 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (1 children)

Me. I have a phone mount installed in the shower. I need my dopamine receptors to be constantly stimulated from artificial sources, or I can't accomplish basic tasks like cleaning/showering/cooking. Executive Dysfunction is a bitch.

People with normal dopamine levels just can't relate, so I get a lot of flack and am often called lazy. Which is annoying as hell because I genuinely want to be a functioning adult, but my stubborn brain just refuses to let me accomplish anything without external stimulation. It's torture being labeled something you're not, just because someone can't understand what it's like when your brain won't make the reward chemicals on its own. But it is what it is.

Also BTW I've been doing this for a decade and only once has a phone actually died on me from water damage. So I don't worry about it. I'm clumsy so I always have an insurance plan for my phones regardless...

Is that not something that meds like Ritalin can help with, like ADHD? Or is it different?

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 9 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago) (2 children)

Stimulants like Adderall, PEA, Octodrine, and Propylhexedrine are a half decent band-aid, but they raise my blood pressure and make me feel "tweaky" so I don't want to take them every day. They feel like they're slowly killing me. I mean imagine taking meth every single day. That's what it feels like for me. Unfortunately since tolerance builds rapidly, I have to take massive doses for it to continue working, further compounding the problem.

So I try not to take stims more than a few times a month, because even once a week is too much for me. It sucks ass that there's no long-term solution for ADHD. Just temporary fixes that rapidly stop working.

Sometimes I want to have a wank and a wash immediately after

[–] FordBeeblebrox@lemmy.world 6 points 14 hours ago

I do, setting it in the corner makes the acoustics great for playing music

Waterproof ≠ Heatproof, and it also doesn't guarantee chemicals and other impurities won't wreck your phone. I took my old phone into the ocean a few times because we didn't have lockers on the beach and no rental car to leave stuff in. It was rated waterproof and it survived, but it didn't want to charge for quite a while and getting the salt and sand out of the usb-c port was tedious.

My fitness watch is as happy in the pool swimming laps as it is anywhere else. I do take it off in the shower though because I don't want to clean soap scum off it or have water trapped between the watch and my wrist. It sounds like I may be inadvertently saving the battery!

Forgetting I had my phone in my pocket, I got in to a 105 F hot tub. I immediately realized and got it out of water. It was already glitching out and dying. That IPX rating does not respect heat!

If you can't take a bath without your phone you might have a problem.

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 8 points 12 hours ago

But how else am I going to use the app for my shower's water temperature and pressure and massage pattern and RGB lighting?

[–] otp@sh.itjust.works 19 points 15 hours ago

Add me to the list of people who just learned that anybody takes their phone into the shower regularly.

From reading the comments though, it seems to be a mix of phone/stimulation-addicted people and people who aren't. But I'm skeptical of those who claim they aren't.

Fucking Christ, so phone fiends can't even take 2-5 minutes to wash themselves with out getting their stimulation?

Civilization can't survive this.

But when I go to use the bathroom, I like to just finish looking at something in the bathroom. Now, to take a shower, I put my phone in a really high place and only listen to music, but I rarely take my phone to the bathroom.

Cell phones are just another addiction; everyone uses them like cigarettes, but unfortunately no one has managed to quit.

[–] T156@lemmy.world 7 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (1 children)

Why not just use a bluetooth speaker, and leave the phone outside the bathroom? That way, if it breaks, then it's not as expensive to replace as a phone, and the audio quality is generally better than what a phone's speakers can put out.

[–] gatitaQwQ@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

Nah, too lazy, besides, why take your cell phone to the bathroom? It's easier to listen to something later, then leave the bathroom. I like music, but nobody in my family likes it either. I don't want to have loud, excessive music to turn the bathroom into a party -_- a waste of time.

Interesting. I got a cheap Xiaomi smartwatch a few months ago and the manual straight up says that the water resistance is good enough for basic swimming but don't bring it into a sauna or hot shower for this exact reason. (I avoid submerging it in general because I bought it secondhand and if it was refurbished that can mess up the waterproofing.)

[–] UxyIVrljPeRl@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago

My mi band 3 survived more than one Ocean swim. Gave it to my mum, still works. The pixel watch i replaced it with is dead, without any swimming.

[–] fritobugger2017@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago

I have been wearing my Huawei smartwatch everywhere for years. Shower, jacuzzi, surfing, etc. No problems so far.

Taking your phone into the shower, waterproof or not, is psychopath behavior. Jesus fuck you guys, take 10 minutes of your day to peel your eyes off of the screen and just relax for a bit.

[–] SpacetimeMachine@lemmy.world 5 points 14 hours ago

I mean, I do both of those things.

[–] rekabis@lemmy.ca 36 points 20 hours ago (12 children)

Who… da fuq… does this??

[–] Toga77@lemmy.world 34 points 19 hours ago (5 children)

Nah hold on.

Manufacturers stole repairability and the headphone jack from us under the guise of waterproofing and now you make fun of people who use the feature?!?

If I had to give that shit up then I want the damn feature. Otherwise waterproof speakers exist and we never had to give up anything.

[–] abaddon@lemmy.world 16 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

Taking away the headphone jack was more likely so they could try to make you buy $200 wireless headphones that need to be replaced every few years.

Y'all need to also stop taking it to take a shit. I deal with my intrusive thoughts just like you but c'mon now. Just stop the addiction at least when in the oval office. Even more so while IN PUBLIC RESTROOMS. Just stop. You're already taking the nature call. Other callers can wait.
