I'm an American, WHAT THE FUCK IS A KILOMETER!?

[–] im_fine_sandy@nord.pub 2 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago) (11 children)

Why is 1 unit of volume 1000 units of weight?

As in, 1 litre of water is 1 kilogram. 1 gram of water is 1 millilitre.

Why couldn't 1 gram be 1 litre?

edit: a better way to phrase this question is as @sc00ter@lemmy.zip put it:

The question wasnt about water specifically. Theyre trying to ask why does 1e3 mass = 1e0 volume and/or 1e0 mass = 1e-3 volume. Why doesnt 1e0 mass = 1e0 volume

It's like the reason 0 is freezing water temp and 100 is boiling water.

They used water as a standard when deciding what things ought to mean.

I mean, milk, beer and wine are measured in hectolitres. Oh, and oil for heating, I believe.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that just the scale? It's not the metric system, there's no meters in here, this could be used for bytes of data: gigabytes, terabytes...

I have to say, "da" is a bad prefix. Good thing nobody uses it.

I changed my car to metric.

When I returned to pick up my car after dropping it off for a smog check, the tech hadn’t done it. He noticed the odometer was in kilometers and putting that “mileage” in the system would have caused havoc on the car’s history (mileage seeming to go up and down is a red flag).

As annoying as that was, it would have been far worse if he’d just entered the kilometers as miles.

Which is to say that switching now is more than just putting up new speed limit signs.

I use metric daily as an engineer, but in my personal life I find some metric measurements pretty silly. Celsius and L/100km are not useful or show it’s not a great system for everyday use.

Not so sure about that, buddy...

If faced with the choice of giving up the metric system forever or giving up tiddies forever, I know which one I'd choose. I can get used to a new system of measurements, but without tiddies to measure, what's even the point?

You have been downvoted.

FAQ

What does this mean?

The amount of karma (points) on your post and Lemmy account has decreased by one.

Why did you do this?

There are several reasons I may deem a post to be unworthy of positive or neutral karma. These include, but are not limited to:

Rudeness towards other Lemmings, Spreading incorrect information, Sarcasm not correctly flagged with a /s.

Am I banned from the Lemmy?

No - not yet. But you should refrain from making posts like this in the future. Otherwise I will be forced to issue an additional downvote, which may put your commenting and posting privileges in jeopardy.

I don't believe my comment deserved a downvote. Can you un-downvote it?

Sure, mistakes happen. But only in exceedingly rare circumstances will I undo a downvote. If you would like to issue an appeal, shoot me a private message explaining what I got wrong. I tend to respond to Lemmy PMs within several minutes. Do note, however, that over 99.9% of downvote appeals are rejected, and yours is likely no exception.

How can I prevent this from happening in the future?

Accept the downvote and move on. But learn from this mistake: your behavior will not be tolerated on Lemmy.com. I will continue to issue downvotes until you improve your conduct. Remember: Lemmy is privilege, not a right.
