In Alberta and elsewhere, the far-right is using referendums to mainstream white nationalism

The growing far-right is a serious sign of failed education and public services and lack of regulations.

So I went to the advanced voting today, we were in line and a little old lady ahead of us started chatting with my wife. She started the conversation by going "thank you for voting today, I've been telling all my friends to get out and vote because its the most important one in our Lives". Half expecting the next sentence to be " because we need to leave Canada" I am happy to report she started going off about Daniel Smith, asking "what kind of Christians are we?" If we vote to underfund immigrants, and that we need to fight against trump. She told us shes always voted conservative her whole life but that she wants to vote out the two-faced UCP. I feel like the winds are changing.

[–] eestileib@sh.itjust.works 27 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That's jaw dropping that someone would use Christian identity to oppose the UCP, but certainly a welcome surprise.

[–] Megaman_EXE@beehaw.org 3 points 2 days ago

It's always a pleasant surprise seeing outwardly religious people use religion for positivity and not negativity

I feel like the winds are changing.

Meanwhile BC seems dead set on throwing out the NDP for a Conservative party that seems to only ever make headlines for how dysfunctional it is.

[–] whoisearth@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Did you not witness Eby shitting the bed with his decision making in the last month? Lol.

The NDP is clutching defeat from the claws of victory.

[–] eestileib@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago

Green Time!

There's a debate in downtown Vancouver this afternoon and the BCNDP are trying to get people to show up to cheer Eby on his way in to the building.

Whee.

Times are not good established parties are getting voted out.

Vote on behalf of those of us who are vulnerable but unable to vote

Far Right used social media as a vector to reprogram society. Hate is a virus.

[–] BillyTheKid2@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago

I'm sure I'm being pedantic, but it's a meme. And I mean the original definition, not the modern/colloquial one.

[–] dasrael@lemmy.zip 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

growing ignorance, failing education, growing effective propaganda, lack of regulation on media manipulation ...etcetc

Our education system really is broken. I've seen it firsthand. It's not just a matter of me or others being in a different generation, but rather it's in terms of their critical thinking, social skills, handwriting, etc.

The younger generation got messed up by Covid in terms of schooling as well.

And for mother fucking fuck's sake, disallow phones in school during school hours!

[–] dasrael@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Oh for sure it's not a "generation" problem, like their DNA is somehow inferior or something. We just use that more to denote sections of people in a given time, who obviously have things going on differently. It's a shitty thing to use though because it often ends up being reduced to simply that.

Technology (bad...technology) has lobotomized generations of people. Big tech needs to be held accountable, stiff regulation and educational reform was needed years ago.. And things chug on as the tech illiterate boomers continue to fuck future generations over.

And yeah, no phones in school.. Hell, I don't think anyone under 18 should be on social media, or using AI chatbots.

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago

For the last decade I've wanted to go back to Canada to raise my kids there because I personally believe I gained a lot from the Canadian public education system and just the Canadian way of life in general. But the more I hear about the current system, I feel like my kids dodged a bulletβ€”not literally, unlike in the US. Seriously though, it seems like kids today learn no critical thinking skills or even tech skills unless the parents have a shit ton of money to put them in better schools.

[–] stinkytofuisgood@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

I'd shake your hand bud cause we're in total agreement!

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 19 points 3 days ago (2 children)

It is not a serious sign of a growing far right, it's a confirmation that the far right is becoming more emboldened.

[–] MartianRecon@lemmy.ca 10 points 3 days ago (2 children)

It's a sign that countries around the world are susceptible to foreign disinformation and unrest campaigns. Brexit was the first shot. trump getting elected is an ongoing attack on American hegemony. AFD in Germany is an attack against an anti-Russian government, the LePenn shit in France is a reaction to them being anti-Russian...

It's not that the far right is growing, it's that the 'traditional west' has been under rampant attack from historical adversaries, and the companies inside the west are letting them attack us collectively, because they make money off of it.

Shut down the bot farms like Ukraine has done, and watch these movements start to wither on the vine.

[–] HasturInYellow@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Oh darn, we will have to explodify all the data centers. :(

[–] MartianRecon@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago

Honestly I'm willing to go more analog in life to get rid of this online unrest bullshit.

[–] mefisdo_dot_info@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

instead of shutting down bot farms, entire countries, Russia, China, Saudi A, Israel, etc should be disconnected from the global internet. It has very little economic benefit to have them online and a huge political downside of easy manipulation. It is much easier to shut down and prosecute bot farms when they are hosted on Western soil. Then we just have to actually prosecute them, even if they are trillion dollar companies like Twitter.

[–] MartianRecon@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

I think we should do both frankly. A hostile entity can rent space at a data center anywhere. Our businesses in the west have shown time and time again they will side with hostile foreign actors for money. So, we need to both cut them off of our internet, and shut down these botfarms.

[–] Canconda@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Stupid people are shutting up less. Birds of a feather squawking together.

[–] rabber@lemmy.ca 20 points 4 days ago (2 children)

After the russian bot farm went offline recently, all of the separatist influencer pages have a fraction of the traffic lol

[–] tempest@lemmy.ca 9 points 4 days ago (1 children)

In this case it's very likely American data centers doing the work.

[–] fodor@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I don't see the logic behind that. Trump has that weird s*** to say about Canada, but most Americans don't ever expect Canada to be part of the US. But there is benefit for other countries to cause strife within both Canada and the US.

[–] imminent_nebula@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 days ago

A divided Canada is a weakened Canada, which benefits the Trump admin. It's not about actually separating, never has been. It's about division.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 days ago

So elon turned off Starlink for Ukraine. Yin and yang or something πŸ˜”

[–] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 20 points 4 days ago

The elites also use referendums to prevent proportional representation from being passed in Canada.

[–] betanumerus@lemmy.ca 10 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

The oil & gas industry (from Russia, US, Arabia, etc) are tugging AB from Ottawa in an attempt to control it instead and take profits away from Canadians. This is about foreign influence and the AB far-right are those prone to being seduced.

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Why would they care they already take profits away from Alberta.

[–] Canconda@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Russia invented hybrid warfare. Everything that's going on, the instability in the USA, was all part of their Regan Era plan to use the republicans to divide and conquer the USA.

Canada is defacto still a US surrogate until we finish diversifying our economy/defenses.

[–] betanumerus@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I don't know why they want even more but they do. You cannot expect them to ever be satisfied. No matter how much you feed them, they always want more.

[–] kablez@lemmy.world 13 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Translation: Plenty of out of touch, spoilt idiots in Canada.

Just got home from the polls!

[–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Never ever stop allowing referendums. They are the ONLY way we have acheived popular change in the US.

Republicans have been trying to curtail and get rid of them in the US, over half of the states have them to some degree. Some states did change the vote from 50 to 60 and such. Ohio maybe, and some SW shitholy one I forget.

We all agree on many things, removing the ability to have a popular vote on it is a recipe for tyranny. (US states often have citizen sponsored ballot initiatives, via petition, maybe you should get some, eh?)

But I agree the separatist vote is, well, tantamount to allying with the US prez, which is at this point, a betrayal of the country, and it's people.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Ohio didn't succeed at changing it. In part because it was a clearly blatant attempt to stop weed and abortion being legalized

[–] snoons@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago

Look at all those old white people! Shocked I say, shocked!
