Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

This is really sweet, gosh.

Honestly, these are similar feels to when I see trans girls so giddy over girly things. I love when others want to join the woman club, it's pretty dang cool over here :3

I didn't realise that cis people could experience gender euphoria until I saw trans women delighting in being a woman. Being in community with trans folk has done wonders for helping me to work through my internalised misogyny, and made me a much better feminist

This comment made me smile, gosh I'm so happy for you to experience that!

It honestly is. Thanks so much for having us 💜

I wouldn't have it any other way :)

What are even girly things, though?

Edit: Genuine question, although a bit rhetorical too, and in good faith; I'm just a bit of a gender abolitionist myself so...

Edit 2: Wtf lol, I typed "fightx when I tried to say "faith" lmaoo

Anything that a girl likes!

For a more serious answer - I was referring to stereotypical things that are seen as worth less because women are primarily interested in them. My own internalized misogyny kept me away from the color pink for a long time as an example.

You have a salient point that nothing is really "girly" or "boy-y" and it should be seen that way more often.

[–] Kangae_Hishiryo@scribe.disroot.org 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yeah yeah! I'd just like more people to realize that something is only "girly" or "boy-y" when someone says so, it's arbitrary and not rooted in the nature of things (because things just do exist).

I always appreciate this message, no worries :)

I'm convinced the majority of trans hatred is misogyny all the way down.

[–] Miisha@lemmy.blahaj.zone 22 points 2 days ago

Can't help but agree with that 🤷‍♀️

[–] kolmaskommentoija@sopuli.xyz 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It definitely is. "Men wanting to be women" kinda breaks the idea, that men are inherently better, since who would want to be something less? And being able to jump from one category to another, diminishes the clear cultural borders between "men" and "women". Both of these bring up uncomfortable feelings and thoughts, about gender roles, which causes a lot of people go defensive, as their simple worldview is threatened. And that fear turns to hate.

Insecure little babies for real

[–] djdarren@piefed.social 27 points 2 days ago (1 children)

100% agree with this, though I'd be far less charitable and would stop at "TERFs need to shut the fuck up".

Yeah, some girls have penises now, what of it? You gonna insist they get all the surgery before they count? I'm still a woman even after I yeeted my uterus, and so is my mastectomy sister. Womanhood is in the soul.

[–] Eiri@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

... Are you okay? I was referring to the vulgar username that's surprising to see.

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Magicock? Yes cock is a word for a penis, and doesn't rule out them being a woman.

[–] Eiri@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago

I never said or implied that?
