This reads like every bad programmer/manager on Lemmy/Reddit that calls me a Luddite every time I push back on their wild assertions about LLMs and code. Absolute clownery.

This is so frustrating because I started degoogling exactly a year ago, and had finally managed to get completely free of Google mostly thanks to the proton ecosystem... But it took a whole year! I am just settling. I am a mom of two under-10yo boys in my forties. I don't have time for this shit. I thought I was gonna die a proton user. Fucking hell.

Time to deproton

Unfortunately the best practice is likely to not let yourself get pulled into any ecosystem. Avoid having any single provider for multiple services, that way if one goes to shit you don't have to move everything.

Another bit is to have things run locally whenever you can. SyncThing works well to syncronize services between multiple devices, especially KeePass (local password manager) and Aegis (local 2FA).

This doesn't fix your current situation, but hopefully it helps you put together a new tech stack that's more resilient

Holy shit. I've spent more than a year and I'm a fucking nerd with no kids to worry about. Hats off to you lady.

Enshitification reaches all things. Even self hosted projects which are high quality.

Goal posts are always moving, incredibly frustrating. In a similar boat and I sympathize with you.

Alisha moving

I had a giggle at this autocorrect

[–] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 1 points 17 hours ago

Fixed 🤣. Damn autocorrect!

People who care about this stuff really need to Stop looking to rent seeking corps and start using and funding collective run services with real standards instead or you're just gonna end up repeatedly having to switch providers everytime a CEO or founder gets exposed.

Here are some examples:

Email with open signup

VPNs (free/pay what you can)

application/vetting or invite needed

I've been using and donating to riseup.net for 15 years and have yet to be disappointed by anything they've done or statements made by any members. It might take a few weeks to get an account approved but it's well worth it.

Wow I'm learning so much stuff here amazing! I didn't know the concept of a tech collective existed. Thanks for sharing! So glad I signed up to Lemmy too.

The fact that one of the email provider examples (disroot) had a major hardware failure few days ago and getting new emails is still not possible is not very reassuring :/ Email being reliable is even more important to me than it being secure (if they leaked at least I would be able to read them :P). And that a serious tradeoff I think one should take into account when choosing smaller, independent provider.

[–] basilisa@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 19 hours ago

I use disroot and I've been getting new emails. Can't access emails i had still up on the server that I didn't download and store locally, though.

I've used riseup in the past and agree with their worldview (for the most part) and they run the service well, but I had to leave them when I became more privacy conscious as they are headquartered in the United States. They could get a national security letter and I could be getting spied on and never know it. The NSL could direct them not to take down their warrant canary, too.

Currently on day four of clearing out my Proton inbox. Moved my files off of Proton Drive, and cancelled my subscription. Next will be changing to a new email alias provider since SimpleLogin is a product of Proton.

Fuck em.

[–] BlameTheAntifa@piefed.social 40 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I am currently in the middle of moving to Tuta.

Andy Yen and Proton can get fucked.

[–] RodgeGrabTheCat@lemmy.ca 15 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (5 children)

Tuta left a comment on Mastodon a couple of days ago that they are researching using AI to automate repetitive tasks. I'll try and find the comment.

Edit that didn't take long https://infosec.exchange/@Tutanota@mastodon.social/117518313763499149

I was hoping for a resignation... now I have to migrate again which is annoying but "c'est la vie."

Fucking hell, it was a huge pain in the ass to migrate everything over to their service. I'm tired boss, indeed.

Yeah ive been harping since he came out as a JD Vance dickrider, but they did a "meh to okay" face saving apology that worked.

The recent shit show is a whole new dimension of abuse and brutality, mixed with "line must go up" silicon valley bullshit at a private non profit, all while being absolutely brainfucked on AI psychosis. Somehow, he also managed to shit on Protons software engineers in a way that was universally hated by his main customers, who are clearly also software engineers.

Dude made himself an an instant nemisis to his most vocal supporters, and the PR two step ain't doing it this time.

[–] Naich@piefed.world 22 points 1 day ago

Holy shit. The kool aid consumption is off the charts.

[–] superfes@lemmy.world 45 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Man, I thought it was going to just be a thing about adopting LLMs... that's fucking off the deep end with that shit.

[–] Itwasntme223@discuss.online 29 points 1 day ago

Yeah. I was going to ride it out but then they decided to go full stupid so I've jumped ship. Ain't going down with them.

[–] shifty@leminal.space 26 points 1 day ago (3 children)

That's what happens when you pay a PR firm to write your blerbs.

Means nothing at the end of the day. It's what you do, not what you say, that defines you.

[–] DreamlandLividity@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago

It's a PR statement. Don't listen what people say, watch what they do. There were signs of proton not caring about security that much long before 2024.

[–] snoons@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 day ago

I'm guessing a combination of chatbot psychosis and massive egos from their positions in the company.

[–] MintyFresh@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Fuuuck. I don't wanna switch vpns. This shit is just tedious.

Lol wut

VPNs is the easiest to switch. That's the one that Proton sucks the most at, and their competition is actually better then them

Proton Mail, Calendar, Drive, and Docs is the hard one to switch (with proper e2ee and all platforms in one service provider)

...but as it turns out, writing and manipulating code is one of the activities for which AI models are most well-suited.

Uhhh...wut?

[–] luciferofastora@feddit.org 25 points 1 day ago (2 children)

writing great code manually is a core skill whose time has passed.

If you're saying people will no longer have to learn to code...

This is not the death of expertise. The LLM is fast. You are slow, but you carry with you a lifetime of experience, judgment calls, and understanding.

...then where the fuck is that expertise gonna come from?

You are also (hopefully) much less prone to hallucination and being mislead by bad or malicious inputs, and are accountable to yourself, your teammates, and to Proton in a way a model can never be. Together you can do far more, far faster than either can do alone.

AI "hallucination" is the product of something that doesn't know what it's doing accidentally doing something wrong despite all training in appearing competent. To correct and counteract that, you need people who actually learned what is correct and know their shit. In essence: you need people with experience in writing good code.

Even if we accepted the premise that needing to adopt AI would be the only way to survive, this logic is so full of holes that I'm wondering whether an LLM wrote it or whether that's just the best logic Butler can deliver after outsourcing his thinking to bullshit machines.

Yyyeah, packing my shit and looking for another non-Five Eyes provider as we speak. I'll give up encryption at rest if I have to, matters far less than not giving psychos another dime.

Andy Yen and Bart Butler gotta go. There's probably others too. Resign guys. Every minute you dont, Proton digs itself deeper into the hole. Do you care more about the product or your ego?
