On Friday night on U Street, an area full of bars and restaurants, a large group of FBI and other federal agents took part in arresting a single man for publicly smoking marijuana, according to witnesses. (Possession of marijuana is legal in the District, though public consumption is not.)

“There’s so much other shit happening in this city, and you guys are arresting him for smoking weed?” an onlooker asks feds, who appear embarrassed, in a video posted by independent journalist Hannah Gais. “For weed!”

Vice President JD Vance, in a recent appearance at Union Station, said the train station needs National Guard protection against “vagrants,” “drug addicts,” “chronically homeless,” and “mentally ill” people.

Jesus. Imagine actually saying you need soldiers to protect you from the most helpless members of society and not being uncomfortable with who you are.

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 3 points 12 hours ago

That's how me being a bone American feel whenever someone says I need my gun to feel safe. Like you are such a coward.

[–] megopie@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 14 hours ago

Like, there regularly are people hanging out there, but they never bother anyone, they’re mostly just taking a break from the weather or using the bathroom.

It’s so surreal to see them talking as if they’re doing me some favor. Like fuck off, it wasn’t a problem, and I didn’t need them inflicting cruelty over it .

[–] FordBeeblebrox@lemmy.world 14 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Also conveniently ignoring that a large portion of those people are veterans who served honorably then got discarded by the government and the VA. I can fucking guarantee you some of the troops currently “protecting” these cities ran up and down the same hills as some of those “vagrants” during basic.

[–] Justas@sh.itjust.works 6 points 14 hours ago

Those vets telling the soldiers "You will be like me in 20 years" over and over should be pretty painful.

[–] GroundedGator@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago

Imagine the level of assistance that could be provided to all of those people for the cost of that press conference.

[–] floo@retrolemmy.com 39 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Criminalizing the helpless is a big step towards dehumanizing them. Once the state has done that, they can get away with treating them anyway they please.

[–] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 14 points 1 day ago

Gotta find a way to keep thos for profit prisons full. Then the prisons "lease" their prisoners to farms, factories, etc since migrant workers are being deported.

Slavers....I mean for profit prisons will make money, businesses get free labor, and prisoners get "work experience".

[–] favoredponcho@lemmy.zip 10 points 1 day ago

I don’t recall homeless people being in Union station. There were maybe one or two within a block radius chilling on a sidewalk, but sending in the national guard for that is actually a joke. It doesn’t need the military. Maybe a few social workers.

[–] decapitae@sh.itjust.works 24 points 1 day ago

These "Feds" should be embarrassed. The fact the weed is illegal should embarrass every person out there. The fact this regime hasn't been dismantled by common citizens (yk, the ones that "gave" it some sort of authority.) yet, embarrasses me. Handle your sh*t you whiny petulant GOP frass for facts clowns.

I'm GLAD we ELIMINATED my VA Benefits to Afford this!

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I'm sure there will be plenty of idiots, including not only unhinged right wingers, but Enlightened Centrists (TM) and not a few leftists, that will blame either Democrats outright, or bOtHsIdEs for such cuts.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Some are real, but a lot of those are trolls.

[–] Sludgehammer@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

So remember to memorize spells like Burning hands, Melf's acid arrow, and fireball before you venture into the comments section.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh, I believe the same about most of the online ones being paid actors. Though I do know a few people IRL of the centrist/leftist type that constantly, and with nearly every criticism of Taco, the cons/Republicans, seem to be incapable of mentioning something the right is doing without somehow implicating the Democrats, the liberals, etc...

It's beyond stupid, but....there are definitely some that are not trolls and have bought into the bOtHsIdEs thing. I think it's because some seem to think this is somehow a intellectually sophisticated take - or at least want others to think so. When all it is that they have fallen into the trap laid for them by the conservative elite and broadcast constantly, for decades, by the "liberal media".

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I know someone like that too, but they're a conservative who hates trump. They told me that they watch Fox and CNN to get both sides, which is a huge yikes. They'll go back to voting republican as soon as he's gone.

[–] devolution@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

CNN is both sides... Hahaha god that's funny.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's usually what I hear when I hear most bothsiderists spinning their bullshit. They want to give themselves and others a permission structure to VOTE REPUBLICAN.

"The Republicans are doing some wild shit - including nearly everything they have been up to during and since Ronnie Raygun, sure, but have you seen the Democrats and their woke agenda? I almost have to vote Republican just to balance out that level of crazy, don't you know! I mean there are men in women's sports! What choice do I even have?"

What the leftists and liberals that spout this bullshit are up to, I have no idea. I usually think they just want to come off as sophisticates or something. That's the ones who aren't paid trolls.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What the leftists and liberals that spout this bullshit are up to, I have no idea. I usually think they just want to come off as sophisticates or something.

In my experience, they've given up.

Also, don't mind the downvotes, the trolls are out and about heavy this weekend.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Downvotes don't bother me much. I find that internet points are worth about as much as BBS points were...

[–] devolution@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

What do Leftists, moderates, conservatives, and fascists have in common?

A desire to fuck everything up to own the libs.

I'm not, sorry that happened. I know you were being facetious but still..

[–] Sludgehammer@lemmy.world 59 points 1 day ago

On Thursday in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood, where federal agents appear to have left a dildo in the place of an anti-ICE banner they purloined a week before, residents confronted and pursued three apparently off-duty federal agents, cursing at them and taunting them about the sex toy. “Did you forget your dildo?” the woman shooting the video repeatedly asked.

I hadn't heard of that one.

[–] Lexam@lemmy.world 50 points 1 day ago

Hard to be tough on crime when it's at an all time low. Seems like the "Agents" are the ones committing the crimes.

I saw some talk of them reclassifying it, although I have no idea why Taco would do that, since the excuse of weed has been used for decades to crack down on "undesirables".

[–] thehowlingnorth@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

Damn "jazz" cigarettes!

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

By the way - this is what I was talking about, although I wonder if it will be like "infrastructure week", since he talks about "next few weeks". Taco is often very full of shit, but knows that very few people will be asking follow-up questions in a few weeks. I don't know if journalists/news agencies don't set a remind me kind of thing for every statement, or if they just don't get the opportunity to ask such things, but in any case, the demons on the right know full well that they won't be called on their bullshit later.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

Definitely infrastructure week. He doesn't like booze or weed, he would be more likely to reclassify coke.

[–] ganksy@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

~~Plus not gonna gel too well with the crypto bros~~

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The reclassifying it as something other than Schedule 1 would annoy the crypto bros?

[–] ganksy@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Nevermind. I should have read the article.

[–] MangioneDontMiss@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Boo this man! Booooo!!!!!!!!

[–] Marshezezz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Let your local magats know how you feel for them subjecting us all to this bullshit. Make them feel as uncomfortable as they have made us all feel. Tail them for no reason while driving, be aggressive or outright shun them. Call them hateful names and mirror their behavior back on them. I have noticed that they get especially uncomfortable when you do it for apparently no reason at all. They end up so confused and scared they don’t even know what to do about the situation.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

The worst of them feel more emboldened than ever and I bet they start threatening - if they haven't already - to call ICE on you.

[–] D_C@sh.itjust.works 1 points 15 hours ago

If this is your take on things then they've already won.

[–] Marshezezz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago

“Bend over and let them ram you” is what you’re saying

[–] aceshigh@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Unsurprising. My neighbors stalk me for weeks when I smoke weed while walking my dog. We have 2 dispensaries on either side of me 5 minutes away. It’s legal to smoke in public…

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

Id do the same for the sweet sweet contact.

How inclusive of the army to enlist little people, they're barely bigger than wheels and yet they protect freedom

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the mmmphhphhhhldahhh!
