This isn’t just a problem for environmentalists or scientists — it’s a direct threat to democratic decision-making. Disinformation erodes our ability to have honest, fact-based debates about the future of the country. It undermines trust not only in science and journalism but in government itself. When voters are manipulated by falsehoods, democracy doesn’t function as it should.

During the election, we saw the consequences play out in real time. From misleading ads claiming that climate policies will "bankrupt the middle class," to talking points that dismiss renewable energy as unreliable, Canadians are being bombarded with claims designed to erode support for meaningful climate action. These messages often use emotional appeals and cherry-picked data, wrapped in populist rhetoric, to create the illusion that fighting climate change is at odds with economic prosperity or national sovereignty.

There’s a broader strategy at work here, too. By letting his opponents expose the smallness of their politics, Carney’s will start to look bigger by comparison. This might not satisfy the Liberal partisans in his midst, although after he saved their party from political oblivion they almost certainly won’t push back very hard. But it will look good to the sort of middle of road Canadians he’ll need to win the next election, whenever it comes — the ones who largely abandoned the party near the end of Trudeau’s leadership.

Without the influence of Trump, we would likely now be instead contending with a Conservative majority government helmed by the party’s most right-wing leader ever.

In fact, the Conservatives made significant gains, despite failing to achieve the electoral outcome they desired. Across the country, the rightward drift is readily apparent, with Conservatives growing their seat count from 119 to 143 and their popular vote share from 33.7 to 41.3 per cent from 2021 to 2025. Moreover, the right secured growth as voter turnout rose by more than 6 percentage points.

Canadians, angered by U.S. tariffs and Trump administration talk of turning their country into a 51st state, really do appear to be boycotting the United States. Ticket sales for travel in summer, a crucial season for the industry, are down 21 percent compared with last year.

The decline in Canadian travelers, who make up roughly a quarter of all foreign visitors, is enough by itself to threaten tourism-oriented businesses in Florida, New York, Maine and other popular destinations.

Sometimes, however, the link between politics and personal travel decisions appears unmistakable. Since President Trump stepped up his hostility toward Canada, border crossings have plummeted.

Unlike air travel, land travel often isn’t planned months in advance, so changes reflect a change in sentiment more quickly. Crossings from Canada dropped sharply after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urged Canadians to “choose Canadian products and services rather than American ones” on Feb. 1.

Traffic at two of the busiest crossings, near Niagara Falls, fell 42 percent in March compared with 2024. And traffic at a busy crossing point between Vancouver and Seattle fell 48 percent.

It's like they've never done this before, and ditched without picking up their garbage from their constituents.

The campaign office is closed now. These are now "someone else's problems," much like every other problem that doesn't affect them.

More than 100 searchers are scouring an area in Pictou County for 6-year-old Lily Sullivan and 4-year-old Jack Sullivan.

The siblings were last seen Friday morning on Gairloch Road in Lansdowne Station, about 20 kilometres southwest of New Glasgow.

Search and rescue teams along with volunteers continued to look for the children on Saturday. Two helicopters and a drone are also part of the search.

Police say the children are believed to have wandered away from a home in the area.

Katheryn Speck said she used to be a Canadian nationalist, travelled the world with a maple leaf on her backpack and once lived in Quebec so she could become fluently bilingual.

But on Saturday she was among hundreds of people who rallied at the Alberta Legislature to support separation from Canada, with many in the crowd waving Alberta flags and a few even displaying the U.S. Stars and Stripes.

"I thought it was a beautiful, fantastic country. But now I'm so disappointed. I'm literally crushed that we'll never be represented in this country and there's never a chance of changing the government," Speck said.

Earlier this week, Premier Danielle Smith's government proposed legislation that would lower the bar for holding a referendum.

Firstly it gives Poilievre an honest opportunity to contribute. People want to see everyone working together, so by letting Poilievre in right away he's giving him a chance to temper the rhetoric and get work done. And if he doesn't temper the rhetoric, it's likely to work in Carney's favour. If he's seen as obstructing, it will not look good for him. It seems like a win-win-win... It looks like fair dealing, if Poilievre comes to the table honestly it works for Carney, if he doesn't it works for Carney as well. It's good politics that is both strategic in the way it encourages good cooperation and has good optics around fairness.

Secondly, the elephant in the room is the separation nonsense. Poilievre is running for a seat in the heart of separatist country, and with the separation rhetoric ramping up, better to have Poilievre - who is ideologically tied to Smith and will be representing Alberta - in the public eye as soon as possible, so he can wear this garbage. After all, Smith seems to be adept at causing no end of hassle for Poilievre. Best to put him front and centre as soon as possible so he is forced to respond to it.

This is just one of thousands of examples of immense disrespect. And his cult follows him along through everything.

I'm all seriousness, if you find this appealing, would you not be happier if you just move there? If you have no allegiance to this country, please be respectful, have some dignity, and don't actively try to ruin it for the rest of us. Stop trying to sabotage this country by actively undermining it.

Elections Canada's validation process has revealed a second closely contested riding's winner has changed after Monday's preliminary result — this time from the Conservatives to the Liberals.

The unofficial results posted on election night showed that Conservative Parm Gill had won the redrawn riding of Milton East-Halton Hills South by 298 votes.

But after double-checking the numbers, Elections Canada now reports that Liberal Kristina Tesser Derksen won by 29 votes.

Doctors are urging public health officials in Ontario and Alberta to step up vaccination and messaging efforts as measles outbreaks in those provinces continue to grow.

Ontario reported 223 new confirmed and probable infections of measles over the past week. As of May 2, a total of 210 confirmed measles cases were reported to Alberta Health.

"That's the largest single week increase since the outbreak began in October of 2024," said Dr. Sarah Wilson, a public health physician with Public Health Ontario.
