Would Canada Be Better Off Without Quebec?

In 1995, Quebec came within a hair’s breadth of leaving Canada. The referendum was so close, 49.4% to 50.6%, that many believed it wouldn’t be the last time Quebec tried to separate.

Nearly 30 years later, the movement is gaining steam again, with Quebec’s separatist party promising another referendum in 2030. But if Quebec finally went its own way, what would that mean for the rest of Canada?

Quebec has long relied on billions in equalization payments, benefited from government favoritism, and shaped national policy to serve its own interests, all while rejecting the very country that sustains it. From subsidized electricity to language laws to political dominance, the province has an outsized influence on Canada’s economy and governance.

I am asking myself if the Canadian population knows what that means to them. At irregular intervals, the EU is given more powers in order to have more power. There is currently a debate about whether the 27 armies should be converted into a European army. This would also affect you if you are part of the EU. In many areas, Canada would lose its powers and passing them on to the EU. This can be seen very clearly in financial policy. You would have to adopt the Euro as your currency and the European Central Bank would make interest rate policy. Of course there are more positive things, but you have to understand and accept that you would lose some of your independence.

No recent precedent for a major party barring reporters from accompanying campaign

The Conservative national campaign director told media outlets Tuesday their journalists won't be allowed to travel with leader Pierre Poilievre on his campaign plane and bus during the upcoming election, ending a decades-old tradition of reporters embedding with a prospective candidate to lead the country.

There is no recent precedent for a major federal party barring reporters, producers, camera operators and broadcast technicians from travelling with a leader during a national election campaign.

In the most recent federal campaigns in 2019 and 2021, for example, major broadcasters, including CBC/Radio-Canada, CTV and Global, a number of print outlets and the wire service, The Canadian Press, had journalists with past Conservative leaders Andrew Scheer and Erin O'Toole throughout the campaign.

While politicians tout the benefits of reducing interprovincial trade barriers to unlock prosperity amid escalating trade tensions, our most precious health-care resources — fully qualified doctors — remain shackled. Physicians face a maze of regulations when attempting to practise beyond their home province. We must break these chains.

Bombardier CEO Eric Martel said on Monday he was concerned Washington could target the private planemaker's U.S. contracts if Canada cancels a C$19 billion ($13.30 billion) deal for 88 Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jets.

"Effectively, we could be targeted. This is my concern," Martel told reporters in Montreal after a speech hosted by the Canadian Club.

In October, Montreal-based Bombardier announced the delivery of an eighth jet to the United States Air Force as part of a deal with a potential value of $465 million. The aircraft carry specialized communications platforms.
