China, Russia and Iran will “very likely” use artificial intelligence to try and disrupt Canada’s next federal election, a new assessment from the Communications Security Establishment Canada says, but are unlikely to undermine the overall integrity of the vote.

The annual report on cyber threats to Canadian democracy, released Thursday, said cybercriminals linked to those countries will most likely use generative AI tools and methods like deepfakes to spread disinformation “designed to sow division among Canadians and push narratives conducive to the interests of foreign states.”

Canadian politicians and political parties will likely be targeted with phishing scams and hack-and-leak operations to further sow discord, the report said.

“We assess that the PRC, Russia, and Iran will very likely use AI-enabled tools to attempt to interfere with Canada’s democratic process before and during the 2025 election,” the report from the CSE and its Canadian Centre for Cyber Security says, using the acronym for the People’s Republic of China.

Summary

Jasmine Mooney, a 35-year-old Canadian woman, has been detained in U.S. immigration facilities since March 3 after attempting to enter with an incomplete Trade NAFTA work visa application.

She was initially held at San Ysidro border crossing before being transferred in chains to detention centers in San Diego and Arizona.

Her mother, Alexis Eagles, reports inhumane conditions including overcrowded concrete cells with constant lighting and inadequate facilities.

Business partner BJ McCaslin called the situation a "nightmare" while Global Affairs Canada confirmed they're aware but unable to intervene in U.S. immigration matters.

Learned about it from this post: https://lemmy.ca/post/40592484

In a global first, Richmond, Canada-headquartered fusion energy company General Fusion achieved the first-ever plasma in a reactor driven by steam.

The European Commission isn't strictly ruling it out either.

“I am ready to sit down with President Trump at the appropriate time under a position where there is respect for Canadian sovereignty and we are working for a common approach, a much more comprehensive approach for trade,” Carney said.

This is the way. Leaders need to stop entertaining the orange idiot. He's the shitty kid that breaks stuff to get attention. Trump needs a time out.

I like Iran's attitude. They said "Whatever. Do what you're going to do." and didn't bother having more of a conversation.

This is what Canada needs to do.

Here is a little description of the website, Disinfowatch:

"DisinfoWatch is a leading Canadian foreign disinformation monitoring and debunking platform. Our data is sourced through an international network of journalists, civil society organizations and analysts, as well as some automated sources, and is anaylized and exposed in order raise broader general awareness of disinformation and build long-term resilience against it.

Our core objective is to increase public understanding and awareness about mis/disinformation, by whom and why it’s produced, how to identify it and how to help stop its spread."

Edit to add some text I copied this morning. The website is down. I don't think it is far-fetched to think Russia would DDOS this kind of website.

"Sputnik, a Russian state media outlet, has published an article targeting Mark Carney, the newly elected leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and incoming Prime Minister. The article frames Carney as an unqualified and problematic leader by listing alleged “mishaps” including one connecting him with Russia’s classic neo-Nazi accusation. It should be noted that Sputnik, like RT, is a key instrument of the Russian government and intelligence services, used for information and influence operations targeting Western democracies. Sputnik’s article is not a neutral critique but part of a broader disinformation campaign aimed at: Undermining Carney’s leadership by questioning his credentials, integrity, and political legitimacy. Eroding Canadian support for Ukraine by framing Carney’s pro-Ukraine stance, especially his use of “Slava Ukraini“, as radical or dangerous. Sowing distrust in Western financial and political elites by portraying Carney as an untrustworthy figure tied to corruption and globalist interests. This article follows a Kremlin playbook commonly used against Western leaders who support Ukraine, climate policies, or strong financial governance. Similar tactics have been used against Canadian officials"

I haven't done adequate due diligence yet - could be inaccurate

I came across this article alleging that Germany is considering bailing on the F-35 aircraft because the US can remotely disable them.

If the US could do this to German F-35s, presumably they can do it to ours....

Additional reporting alleging concern in Canadian defence circles
