Here’s a fun game the Trump administration keeps playing: destroy a successful government program, wait a few months, then breathlessly announce you’ve “invented” the exact same thing but with obvious corruption mechanisms baked in.

If any energy projects should be cancelled because they threaten national security it should be fossil fuel plants, since the US defense and intelligence communities have issued literally dozens of reports, over decades, consistently and clearly identifying fossil-fuel use and climate change as threats to national security and to the facilities and operations of the US military.

For more than fifty years, the US intelligence and defense communities have worked to understand the threats to national and international security from a range of environmental factors, including pollution, population, water and energy resources, and the accelerating impacts of climate change. These assessments have concluded that environmental threats from fossil fuels will both increase the potential for violence, conflict, and war, and have growing impacts on US military forces and infrastructure.

According to Georgetown’s report, ICE’s surveillance reach extends into datasets covering a large share of the U.S. adult population. The authors estimate ICE has used face recognition to search driver’s-license photos for about 1 in 3 U.S. adults (32 percent), has access to driver’s-license data for about 3 in 4 adults (74 percent), can track vehicles in cities home to about 3 in 4 adults (70 percent), and can locate about 3 in 4 adults through utility-linked address data.

“It is a mistake to think about what the Trump administration is doing now as ‘immigration enforcement,’” the report states. “Trump is using immigration powers as the vehicle for the activities of his militarized police force, which is currently composed of ICE and CBP agents, as well as local police who have been officially or unofficially deputized to do the bidding of the federal government.”

Archivists have saved and uploaded copies of the 60 Minutes episode new CBS editor-in-chief Bari Weiss ordered be shelved as a torrent and multiple file sharing sites after an international distributor aired the episode.

The moves show how difficult it may be for CBS to stop the episode, which focused on the experience of Venezuelans deported to El Salvadorian mega prison CECOT, from spreading across the internet. Bari Weiss stopped the episode from being released Sunday even after the episode was reviewed and checked multiple times by the news outlet, according to an email CBS correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi sent to her colleagues.
