is there a real source for this or just some twitter guy?

[–] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 93 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Some Twitter guy has multiple awards for journalism, I'm inclined to give him some benefit. But I would like someone to provide an official statement.

[–] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 77 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Citations or GTFO because we should always check for sources especially in this day and age, awards or not.

[–] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 59 points 3 days ago

You're not wrong. Just highlighting he at least has some credibility beyond the average xitter poster.

It's just speculation. No real motive has been determined. https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2025-09-12/what-we-know-about-the-suspected-killer-of-charlie-kirk

LA Times wrote this less than 15 minutes ago:

Investigators are still looking through evidence and trying to determine a motive in the slaying.

The only things in writing are the words etched into the bullets, and those are mixed. He wrote an anti-fascist statement on a bullet casing and other text on others, but nothing to indicate he had liberal or conservative ideologies. If anything, he appeared to be mostly mad at the whole system.

[–] wetbeardhairs@lemmy.dbzer0.com 67 points 3 days ago

Honestly with this administration, I have a difficult time believing any evidence they provide. The head of the FBI is a fucking podcaster who was able to lie profusely to the point that he caught Trump's attention. That must take a lot of lying.

[–] curbstickle@anarchist.nexus 56 points 3 days ago (5 children)

He wrote an anti-fascist statement on a bullet casing

No, he wrote Helldiver's 2 and groyper memes.

Hey, fascist! Catch! ↑ → ↓↓↓

Is for this: https://helldivers.wiki.gg/wiki/Eagle_500kg_Bomb

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 19 points 3 days ago

They say the truth can't get it's pants on before a lie made it around the world, but I love Lemmy cause mfers come with sources within minutes or hours

[–] thespcicifcocean@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

When I first heard about the three arrows, I thought it was a reference to the iron front. This is so much lamer.

[–] spacesatan@leminal.space 1 points 3 days ago (3 children)

How do you get more explicitly anti-fascist than 'Hey fascist catch (a bomb)' and bella ciao?

[–] curbstickle@anarchist.nexus 12 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

"Notices bulges OwO what's this?" is used within the groypers to make fun of furries, as well as when they are (ugh I hate that I'm about to say this word) "transvestigating", which is when they "investigate" whether someone is trans or not. Also see "If you read this, you are gay LMAO"

Bella ciao is also used ironically within the groypers.

If it was the only thing there... Sure. Its not though, its one of several things, which all have one very specific context - groypers.

Context is always important.

Edit: Forgot to add - with Helldivers 2, the joke is you've got fascists dropping bombs while saying they are dropping bombs on fascists. Again, a meme reference for groypers.

[–] Bronzebeard@lemmy.zip 10 points 3 days ago

In the game where that code is from, you play as a human soldier fighting for a starship troopers-esque over the top obviously fascist but played for laughs Super Earth Government, and they routinely call the bug aliens fascist while calling in bombing runs on them.

[–] Unpeeled3828@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Good question. I'll show you something then you decide or you want to dive into it further. It mostly far-right meme shit and doesn't make a lot of sense for outsiders.

[–] spacesatan@leminal.space -2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

80 years as one of the most recognizable anti fascist anthems vs some random Spotify playlist. Surely he referenced it because it carries the same weight as ASTRO - Slowed Opium Remix.

I'd like to raise a few points:

  1. Conservatives are media illiterate.
  2. Deeply online groypers live under 16 layers of irony at all times.
  3. Fascists love pretending that they're actually heroes fighting the real fascists who want to give people free bread. To a lot of Americans, communist and fascist are the same word.

I can't tell you if bella ciao is a popular alt-right meme because I don't hang out with them, but I can tell you it's far from impossible.

There is a post on front page of Reddit that said shooters granny said he was maga on her Facebook page but I did not see any proof of it one way or other.

Edit post is here now too

To be fair, my own granny died thinking I was still a card carrying Republican. Sometimes you don't tell Grandma you are a godless liberal. The old folks don't really need to know everything. Christmas gets kinda awkward if you do.

[–] Bebopalouie@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago

I am almost 70 grannies and such are long gone. I get to be a godless liberal with no side eye.

[–] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Most articles actually said the complete opposite of what this shitter post claims.

Cox said: "The family member referenced a recent incident in which Robinson came to dinner prior to September 10, and in the conversation with another family member, Robinson mentioned Charlie Kirk was coming to UVU."

There was a mention of how "Kirk was full of hate and spreading hate".

Most articles also say that one of the bullet casings had a "bella ciao" engraving which could be false flag but also could be real.

[–] Bronzebeard@lemmy.zip 9 points 3 days ago

Bella ciao is in a number of these far right guys' playlists.

[–] Tb0n3@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Not to mention the stuff on the casings was specifically antifascist.

[–] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 23 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

FWIW, there's plenty of alt-right "advice" out there to use left wing messaging if someone decides to do something stupid. It's potentially a tactic to misdirect and frame the violence.

[–] Bronzebeard@lemmy.zip 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Not really, the "hey fascist, catch" one is from helldiver's 2, where the satirical fascist human soldiers ironically call the bug aliens they fight fascists. The arrows are the code to call in an airstrike.

This dude was putting his groyper memes on his bullets

[–] Tb0n3@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Helldivers 2 is popular, but I'm more focused on the Bella Ciao lyrics. Seems pretty obscure for a surface level imitation of antifascists.

[–] Bronzebeard@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 days ago

Apparently there's a remix version all over the groyper playlists they share.

[–] MangioneDontMiss@feddit.nl 3 points 3 days ago

casings can very easily be planted. that shouldn't be convincing taken on its own.

[–] cyborganism@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 days ago

That's what I'm waiting to see. We have to be patient.
