Why? I think it's useful to try to prevent a repeat.

There are solutions to stopping repeats but this Government will not pass them.

Perhaps, but wouldn't it be nice to stop it with the next admin? Or at least inform the public so people can know what to look for in their family and friends?

The next admin is going to pass common-sense gun laws? I highly doubt that.

I haven't seen proposed gun laws that don't already exist and would actually solve the problems we're seeing. For the most part, they're things like assault weapons bans (more based on look than function), mag size restrictions (easy to mod smaller mags or 3d print your own), unenforceable "ghost gun" laws, etc.

What I think we need is:

  • widespread gun safety classes (perhaps in schools?)
  • free mental health access (at least a few visits) if your income is below some amount (say, 2x median income), funded by sales of guns, alcohol, tobacco, etc (mental health could include addiction recovery as well)
  • improved social connection that's not social media echo chambers

A lot of gun violence is committed with illegally obtained guns, or guns owned by people who should no longer have them. So adding more laws on top to restrict guns won't solve the problem.
