From the articles written about this, it feels a lot more like they're more annoyed at being called fascists and viewed as fascist than they feel about, you know, actually being fascists. It's quite like the people at OpenAI that demanded for Sam Altman to come back after he was rightfully fired. They didn't care about lofty goals of the board of OpenAI, they were in it because Altman had promised to make them insanely rich. They don't care about the ethics, they just want the money.
It's literally the plot of the film Cube from 1997 where one of the people who built it is trapped inside the Cube and admits he was being paid well so he never questioned what they were building.
