Valve is truly one of a kind company, their marketing has been so effective that they managed to create a culture of idiots that go around the internet defending their products

They just released Half-Life 2 in 2004 and that was it.

Has valve even done any form of marketing or advertisement outside their store?
As far as I'm aware they are just really good at keeping their mouths shut.

Marketing isn't just buying television ads. Loot boxes and reward systems are also a form of marketing.
i guess yeah if by "reward system" you mean they run steam pretty well

fyi you linked a short article about candy crush, and it barely explains what that game does, i don't see how is that related to steam

For profit companies who's goal is to make money also use game mechanics for marketing, yes.

I remember being absolutely fucking pissed when I bought Skyrim and got a steam key instead of an actual download.
I remember there being more concern about being forced to use a platform to install/play your games back in the late naughts/early 2010s.
Back then valve wasn't probably doing as much advertising
