Do you separately also learn characters themselves? I like Skritter for that alongside HelloChinese, and I often catch myself being able to read random pieces of Chinese I see in the wild
When reading / practicing I never use the pinyin, so I can get used to recognizing them. Ya it def helps, otherwise I'd rely too much on pinyin.
