Oh wow - I thought our neighbor when I was a teenager had come up with this one themselves, when they warned my parents I was listening to satanic music.
The satanic panic was real in the 80s
I'd argue it never truly ended and was the birth of the modern "culture war".
Honestly if you look at the 90s through 2000s people were claiming the same stuff about pokemon and Harry Potter.
All of it ties back to Jerry Falwell. The institutions he created continue to do damage to this day
There were plenty of people claiming that the Wicked movie was witchcraft. Things have not changed.
I remember sneaking away and lying where I was going so I could secretly play Dungeons and Dragons.
"No, mom, I'm going to a party! With drugs! And alcohol! I swear!"
"You can't fool me, sonny! I know you don't get invited to parties. You're going to play Dragons and Dungeons with that group of nerds you call your friends, aren't you!"
