This is how homosexuality feels to me. The people love somebody for whom they are similar to. The "traditional" straight couple just does not feel right to me.

You can be similar to people of the different sex. Personality wise, goals, likes and dislikes. Lofe experience and background.

Nope, men in one corridor and women in another.

Edit: and there's nothing hypocritical about this, at all.

Or, the people love somebody who complements them. Like two poles of a magnet.

There are essentially two styles of bonding: either having the similarity to share the experience and background and more readily understand each other, or having one complement another, so that one covers where another cuts short.

Imagine two people liking the sun vs one liking the sun and another liking the rain. In the first couple, they will be happy to share the sunshine, but will both be depressed when the rain comes. In another, one will energize from the sun, keeping another in an upbeat mood, and the other will get all cozy in the rain, bringing cocoa, plaids and love. Both are cool in their own right.
