It's kinda funny. My wife and I were living together in a committed relationship for about five years. Then her mom said, in passing, "Aren't you worried he doesn't want to buy the cow if he can get the milk for free?" And that just sent her into a tailspin for weeks.
So, about a year later, we got married. And it's been great. Ceremony was an excuse to have a big party with all of our friends. We've got a bunch of pictures all over the house where we can say "Damn, we looked good when we were younger". Given the tax advantages and the fact that we were about to buy a house and have a son anyway, it was the logical move. But it's amusing that this was the straw to break the camel's back, so to speak.
Don't you mean cow's back?
Uncool dude that's his wife

Sounds kind of like the ideal wedding attitude to me. Light on the symbolism, heavy on the "one last rager to remind ourselves that we're actually kinda too old to be doing that anymore".
Similar boat. Already had a house, been together for years. Getting married was just for fun and tax benefits. It changed nothing, otherwise.
