Moderator Guidelines
Moderator Guidelines
- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

This is something that has to start before a war even begins. Investing way more resources into researching and developing non-lethal warfare. Knocking people out instead of killing them will achieve pretty much the same effect of stopping aggressions. I do see, that currently, Ukraine is stuck using the same tools of systematic murder that have been developed over millenia. So they don't really have as much of a choice. However, others have, others can.
What kind of a delusional view is this? A country that's willing to go to war is a country that's willing to kill. War is not a child's game, it's literally a matter of life or death. There's no such thing as a non lethal war. You can't add safety rules to something that has no rules and expect countries at war to abide. That's the whole reason why the geneva conventions and war crimes are a big joke. No country would willingly put themselves at a disadvantage by using non lethal weapons when their enemies will use lethal weapons, especially when there's no enforcer to come to your aid when it happens. War will always be a competition about death, destruction, and power.
That's exactly the kind of backwards thinking that keeps us stuck in this mess.
You are missing the fact that most people don't want to die. Including soldiers on either side of the war and that a large portion of them don't want to put themselves on the frontlines. Many are pressured into it. And don't mistake the few rulers in power for the whole country.
And yes, there are plethora of examples for non lethal military operations. What's missing, is putting this onto a larger scale.
Furthermore, you are assuming that going for non-lethal options is directly putting a side into a disadvantage. This is not necessarily the case and mustn't be. If the goal is to defend against and stop aggressors, there already exist several ways to achieve this without having to kill a single person. And there could be many many many more, if we would invest more resources into that kind of warfare instead of finding more clecer ways to be murderers and traumatize entire generations.
It's not a matter of mentality, it's a matter of reality. Your reasoning is simply not tethered to the reality of the world.
Everybody wants a peaceful world filled with sunshine and rainbows, but we don't live in that world. While you're right that a lot of people don't want to die, it's also true that a lot of people simply have no problem killing others. People like you forget that the laws of nature apply to us as well. It only seems like it doesn't because we cleverly figured out that if we monopolized violence, society becomes a lot easier to manage because there's a greater power to enforce common standards. However, there's no greater between countries. There's no state of countries that a victim country can turn to for justice or help. They're on their own, and the only way they can protect themselves is if they have the means to fight back.
You can talk about hypotheticals for eternity, it doesn't mean anything. At the end of the day, there are dictators, there are violent people, there are extremist groups, there are warmongering societies. It would be nice if they didn't exist, but they have always existed and they still exist now. We can't address what could be, we can only address what is. If you're a country in the world right now, it is your responsibility to protect your citizens from external threats because that's why you exist as an entity. It is the duty of the state to use every means necessary to ensure the best for its citizens, including the use of violence as a means of defense and deterrence.
When you find a way for Ukraine to defend and stop Russia's ongoing invasion against them, then please tell me because you might just be the first person in history who has solved war.
