I hear these complaints from people in other provinces, but when I look at my local store, there is aleays an assortment of booze from every province on the shelf.

I'm a non-drinker and know very little about the topic, but some provinces seem awfully protective of their local booze industry.

That goes back to the early days of provincial authority over alcohol.

50 years ago, even the big brewers (Molson, Labatt, etc) had to have a physical brewery in each provincial that they sold product in.

While it was not efficient from a business point of view, it did lead to them developing regional beers that were very popular in their home province.

On the other hand, some of the regional beers did become national favorites.

For example, Labatt Blue was originally developed as a promotion for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers football team, and eventually went on to be one of their flagship beers nationally (the recipe being made in every province's Labatt brewery until the rules changed and they were allowed to ship beer from a central brewery.)

I worked at Molson and Carling. The regional beers were just rebranded beer with different bottles and labels. People drink anything, and 99% of big beer sales is just marketing.

It's not just alcohol, there have been stupid interprovincial trade barriers for too long to attempt to shore up smaller provincial industry.
