Community rules (click to expand)
1. Follow the site-wide rules
- Instance-wide TOS: https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/
- Lemmy code of conduct: https://join-lemmy.org/docs/code_of_conduct.html
2. Be civil
- Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
- Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
- Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
- Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
- Bigotry of any kind will not be tolerated. This is an LGBTQ+-friendly community -- if that is a problem for you, you should leave.
3. Post Linux-related content
- Including Unix and BSD.
- Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of
sudoin Windows. - No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
- Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
4. No recent reposts
- Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves / tolerates / hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.
5. π¬π§ Language/ΡΠ·ΡΠΊ/Sprache
- This is primarily an English-speaking community. π¬π§π¦πΊπΊπΈ
- Comments written in other languages are allowed.
- The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
- Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
6. (NEW!) Regarding public figures
We all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations. - Keep discussions polite and free of disparagement.
- We are never in possession of all of the facts. Defamatory comments will not be tolerated.
- Discussions that get too heated will be locked and offending comments removed. Β
Please report posts and comments that break these rules!
Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

Kinda like posting a harry potter meme in a community full of trans folk...
We see where you're coming from, and also it is unhealthy to be extremely sensitive to every single hint of bigotry, from malicious or innocent sources, from your instance or others'. Take it from me - it destroys you to focus on the negative so much that you start to miss the positive.
I know you put so much effort into taking care of others, particularly transfolk (who don't get themselves kicked out, like I did π) on blΓ₯haj.zone. Remember to care for yourself also!
Edited the Β° π
You put the Β° on the wrong "a" π
~~Lonely~~ Lovely (π ) sentiment and message though. β€οΈ Very true.
Typo. Unless you're trying to emphasise how sadly uncommon it is to see such a lovely sentiment.
I was only trying to empathize what I wrote, that a) the a and Γ₯ were swapped, and b) they said something very heartwarming. No hidden message or reading-between-the-lines necessary. π
What?
I think they might mean "Lovely" rather than "lonely".
Gotta love it when people making fun of errors make errors π
Muphry's Law strikes even me! π Gotta love it. Thanks for pointing it out, guys!
Although to be fair I wasn't making fun π
Spot on!
Lmao yes, definitely autocorrect being an ass here. Thanks for pointing it out!
Why thank you aha! I never remember which a it goes above - I'm not too good with Swedish aha~
Don't worry, Swedish people love correcting others, one will always come along and have your back π
I'm trans myself... but yea I guess you're right. Didn't really see this as problematic... but yea fair enough
It's not. It's just a scene from a movie. Aim your artillery at that cβnt Rowling, instead.
I liked the meme, keep em coming!
This is what aiming at her looks like.
This, as in what?
As in pushing back and making noise when people post stuff that helps keep her relevant.
If I have a tool for decreasing the amount of harm she does, this is it.
Will it make much difference? No, but if a single person hesitates before posting potter stuff in the future, then it helped a little
I say fight the big fight, but whatever. I'm gonna enjoy this meme, and still keep my hate for Rowling relevant.
I, like many folk, just want to see less of Rowling, not more. That's all
I get where you're coming from and it's hard to tell the difference, but actually that's Robbie Coltrane, not J.K Rowling
Jokes aside, that's a beloved character played by a beloved actor who unfortunately won't be appearing in any more movies. Personally I haven't sent a single cent Rowling's way since watching Deathly Hallows part 2 in the movies and never will again, but the bitch can't take away the fond memories I have of reading the books and seeing the movies, especially the first one where this is from.
I think most people here on the fediverse know enough not to support her financially, but when it comes to memes, the movies aren't just her art, they were made by a ton of people who don't necessarily share her views (I suspect that in the 00s, nobody knew about them). And it'd be a shame to lose good memes that evoke such nostalgia
Keeping her relevant in popular culture is supporting her financially, politically and socially, because her relevance influences both her wealth and her political clout.
And I'm going to pushback against that. In this case, it was a single line snarky comment that referenced the meme in question. In response, I got 5 or so responses from people, each of them multi paragraph long, insisting on telling me just how it's actually ok to post Rowling stuff.
And from my perspective, if you're ok enough with Rowling to not say anything when a Rowling meme is posted, you should also be ok enough with someone posting a snarky one liner in pushback against it.
But if folk are ok with a meme that entrenches the relevance of a virulent transphobe, but a snarky response to that meme warrants a multi paragraph response, then it might be time to re-evaluate priorities...
Same here. I would never willingly watch harry potter or support her on purpose. I just thought this was a good meme template and honestly, I love Hagrid. Hagrid is fictional and his actor is dead. I don't care about JK, she can die. I still love Hagrid.
As long as you can accept that many people don't want to see Potter memes and can accept a little pushback, you'll be doing better than most folk.
of course. I absolutely get why people would dislike them. There's quite a few I don't like either
Had to check the community rules, but couldn't find them calling this place a trans community. In fact, they explicitly call it a "meme community" and this is a very common meme format. If you're inclined to check the rules yourself, I'd like to point you to number 3
This is absolutely a trans-inclusive community, ~~it just isn't spelled out~~ (e: it is now) because inclusion should be natural. I don't like making assumptions about a person's identity or beliefs (unless they scream it to the heavens, at which point it isn't an assumption anymore), and I can't determine whether a person is welcome here based on what they are. When a person's behaviour becomes problematic, that is when I step in. In particular, if someone reports a homophobic, transphobic, or racist comment, you won't see me argue with them: those comments get immediately deleted and the user permanently banned. Fortunately, nearly all community members I've seen are friendly, or at least polite, with LGBTQ+ folk.
Regarding the meme in question. There is an argument to be made that just using the media as a meme, even of an unrelated topic, gives the author unwanted exposure. I don't think this applies in this community, or most of the fediverse (excepting places like Grad or Hexbear). We all know that JK is morally inferior to what came out of my dog this morning. Seeing this meme won't change that position, nor does it try to glorify her morals or justify her views. It is the essential meme: a well-known scene from popular culture, removed from its environment, to express an idea or sentiment that is common within this demographic.
Chad mod action
I'm one of the biggest Rowling haters you'll ever meet but I agree with this comment in its entirety
If it were against the rules, I'd have reported it.
Instead, I made a snarky comment, because even though it's not against the rules, the less Rowling in the world, the better.
There's a lot of trans people in linux and foss communities
which by the phrasing is what Ada is saying, not that it's specifically a trans community
Sorry Ada -- I was referring to myself! I originally lived on blΓ₯haj but was banned for promoting violence against bigots and generally making hate-fuelled comments. It was not okay to be so extreme.
Maybe it will irritate JK to see it.
