Yeah, that's why I'm holding on to everything I can and just not engaging with those money sinks. Better I give my loved ones a leg up than blow it on maintaining a miserable quality of life anyway.
Just being aware of what they're doing helps you avoid it.
For instance Matthew Broderick is promoting a new gambling app, which isn't based on sports or cards, and its colorful and similar to Candy Crush, for people who aren't traditional "gamblers."
Worse, the advertising is aimed at middle-aged women, but not just any middle-aged woman. I've seen three separate ads, and all of them feature women being ignored and neglected by their families, then Ferris Beuller sidles up, and offers them this new game, just for them, to make them feel better.
This is how the "Slippery Slope" works. First it's just the same casino gambling as the Hard Rock Casino up the street, so it's okay. Then it's sports betting because that's already going on anyway, we might as well make it legal, so we can get the same money that crooks used to covet.
Now it's evolved to gambling on Candy Crush (essentially), and attracting a new audience that has never been much of a gambling audience, but if we can sell them gambling's dopamine hits as a solution to middle-aged ennui, we can make a fortune.
Women are often the stewards of the family's finances. In a couple of years, we'll be reading stories about women who lost the family home because they gambled away the mortgage on their phones.
