"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

Oof. Is this intended to be some nice copium for someone? I don't think it works on me.

As a small reminder: There's a ludicrous amount of capital invested in the US AI industry. I forget what it was, but so much, it's not even enough people use ChatGPT on their phones. They need to displace like a substantial amount of the global human workforce to break even and subsequently turn profitable. It's a big bet on how in the future, the USA are going to dominate the entire world by some very select AI companies and their products.

And losing trillions of dollars would be devastating. So it's logical to be very afraid of the competition. And write long articles about it. It absolutely needs to be Anthropic and OpenAI who win some AI war.

But it's also very dystopian. We other people don't want to be ruled by some American AI companies either. I bet not even the US population wants that. Heck, some people even don't like war, especially once they're the pawns.

Also same, same. The CCP uses AI for propaganda, the American president also posts gen-AI "memes" all the time. And from what I know they also do propaganda text, campaigns and let some AI roll the dice on tariffs and bills. I don't see a big difference. If there is, the Chinese government is more clever in what they do?!

And (I can't verify it) but the entire premise of this text reads like some MAGA talking point on how it's not the Texans who are opposed to a big dirty datacenter nextdoors, but some Chinese manipulation tactics that makes his, and his friends' fascist shenanigans unpopular amongst the people.

Oh, and American AI systems will NOT "develop better ways to filter out clearly biased sources." They'll put their own spin on things. That's how chatbots operate. You put in what you'd like to hear. And the chatbot will write it. They're kinda good at it?! Why would these systems suddenly work in a completely differently way for US companies? They won't. They'll put some spin on things the US tech bros come up with.
