They could have made a peace settlement a month in to the war in March 2022, given the DPR and LPR independence and not had to deal with anymore Russian invasions. But instead they listened to people like Boris Johnson enthusiastically telling them to fight to the last Ukrainian because we'll keep giving you weapons.
That specifically is fair. That was a fairly small window of time though.
