I thought twins were always split from the same egg. Great and my only news source for learning, shit posts.

Identical twins, yes. You can have multiple eggs fertile at the same time. Two of my childhood friends were a boy and girl who were twins, obviously look quite different lol

[–] Godric@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Thanks for the knowledge! I've been walking around knowing that Twins and Identical Twins are different; yet thinking that sex differences were developed post fertilization, like we do some in-vitro reptile shit, hahaha

Mental apologies to my AP bio teacher, who probably taught me better! He took great pleasure in publicly slaughtering transphobic ideology, before it was cool.

I think that's just identical twins, but fraternal twins are two separate eggs being fertilized, which is how you can have twins of different sexes

The concept of "twins" is far older than any knowledge of eggs (in mammals) and sperm cells. Two babies come out at the same time, language decided to call those twins.

Eggs "(in mammals)" as opposed to what other thing in other animal groups?

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Eggs in non-mammals? Like, notably, chicken eggs?

[–] bryophile@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Ah I get what you mean now, I kept thinking which animals do not have eggs but do get twins...

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 1 points 1 day ago

Heh, I added that because I KNOW if I hadn't and just said "eggs" (or even "egg cells"), some smartass would've come along like "what, they didn't know what this 🥚🥚🐣 is?" You just CANNOT win with the internet ;D
