I agree wholeheartedly, but I'm a realist, a pragmatist, and I've already accepted that meaningful consequences for Trump are simply not gonna happen outside of another massive secret service screw-up. He will, unfortunately and almost certainly, either die in office of natural causes or so soon after leaving it (whether he leaves it as scheduled remains to be seen) that actual consequences will never materialize for him.
I am, however, slightly more hopeful that his administration, full of younger men with ambitions of their own, that they end up in tiny, grey, concrete rooms for the rest of their natural lives for committing treason, at some point. Only slightly, though.
Democrats: Ha! Just you wait! We're so ready to "look to the future, not the past" and let them get away with everything like we always do!
I'm still legitimately surprised Biden didn't pardon Trump to "Let the nation heal", though I guess slow walking his prosecution was his quiet verison of that
When you have a president that interferes with the DoJ, it looks exactly like what Trump is doing right now.
An independent DoJ is the sole reason why his first term was not full of retaliatory prosecutions. But he learned what he needed to do to rig it, and then did so. And now we have what we have. Is that really what you want out of the US going forward?
I do NOT want a DoJ that a president interferes with, period. If it's only "justice" for some, it's NOT justice.
However much I hate it, he followed the "right" way of handling the DOJ in that he didn't request anything or interfere with anything. We don't want the president having direct control over the DOJ in that way. What he did fuck up with though was picking Merrick Garland, the biggest fucking coward this country has ever seen. He didn't want to be seen as "being political" so he dragged his ass on starting the investigation until it was too late and Trump could play the delay delay delay game :/
Except this time they won't have to talk just their own citizens into that idea. A lot of countries are pissed at the US, and they won't forget it anytime soon.
Tariffs, wars, insults and threats of invasion, those things will have to be addressed before the relationship can be mended.
This. The US of magastan are screwing over the whole world and not many are willing to keep going with this. Hell, even Italy's Meloni, a fascist fuck that idolized the orange pedohitler, is starting to say that dealing with it is harder than she thought.
When the orange fuck finally croaks, there will be a worldwide party and many of the assholes in that administration will realize that if they ever leave the power, they will face several consequences because the world will demand them if the US wants to be considered relevant again.
The definition of treason would need to be redefined unfortunately. I agree but, due to these same issues they deliberately defined what treason is in the constitution and it requires an act of war or assisting/aiding a known enemy to the country. It's defined as an "only" which prevents it from being expanded.
This was intentional as they didn't want treason to be used like how it did with Britain where they would use treason as a reason to silence dissidents, but it causes anything that uses treason as a crime to have a really high bar that is unlikely to ever actually be met. There's still argument that trump hasen't committed treason, and that's with his direct ties and friendships with russia.
Thankfully (or maybe unfortunately is a better word for it), they've done a lot more illegal things than treason.
I think democrats have more than enough things to prosecute them on if they want to. Real question is if democratic LEADERSHIP wants that.
All depends if they are going to still sit on the hypothetical moral throne again. Thats why nothing gets done with the party, they go off a "well that happened but we can't stoop to their level" style policy, so with every step forward its 15 steps back.
Personally I hope they do hard focus it but, I also hope it doesn't become the running headline for their next cycle they get in, as they need to fix the fundamental issues with the system that allowed this first since a trial like that prosecution will easily last more than the length of a single term.
