the BSD’s are still a few years behind

As long as many BSD developers (especial at FreeBSD, I think it's a lesser degree with Net and Open) are Mac users who actively reject using any FOSS BSD on desktops/notebooks and only care about contributing regarding server stuff, this won't change.
