I am very surprised how popular these things are. I read a random hackernews comment about the X4 a few months ago, ordered one directly (apparently the ones from ali are not so easily flashable), installed crossink(another crossreader fork) on it and used it since.

The other day on my way home some random dude in the tram was actually speaking up to me about it..which is the first time someone approaches me for tech since 2024 when someone saw me using a framework laptop in a café. I think thats a real measure of popularity..one that I totally missed.

With crossink the device is fine, battery is basically eternal, reading is fine, initially I thought the small screen would annoy me but its actually quite good because its way tinier than a normal 6 or 9 inch tablet. I am used to read on my iPad mini and thats a lot more unwieldy. Only problem is that if you dont prep the epubs beforehand, the poor esp32 is heavily strained when any images occurs.

On a personal hobby site, I wrote some scripts to scrape webnovels and turn them into epubs and that works very well for me
