This is not a "conflict", it is a russian war of aggression.
Ukraine will have elections once elections can be held in all of Ukraine.
There was diplomacy, but Russia has broken ceasefire, diplomatic deals (for example Kiev I, Kiev II) and international treaties a multitude of times. Now, understandably, Ukraine refuses to accept another empty deal. Kyiv wants real security guarantees, knowing that past ceasefires have only given Russia time to regroup and prepare for future attacks.
Diplomacy can be done, when it's a way to peace, diplomacy needs to be ignored when it's just another tactic of aggression against oneself.
