US woman falsely charged with bank theft sues for $10m over AI facial recognition

"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"
A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.
AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.
$10 million isn't nearly enough, especially considering how wantonly they abused this woman's rights. It should have been obvious that this woman from Tennessee who had never been to North Dakota, or even been on an airplane, was the wrong person, but they didn't even bother to apply the slightest bit of Critical Thinking to her case, so they kept her locked up for six months, as she remained terrified that she'd spend the rest of her life in prison. Then when they finally released her, it was on Christmas Eve, in the cold, in North Dakota. That alone should cost them $10 million.
The city is going to want to settle, and settle big, but she should drag them through the courts anyway, humiliate them for their virtuosic incompetence, and maybe the jury will award her an even larger amount. I would, if I were on the jury.
They should get testimony from the four children she was babysitting when she was wrongly arrested as well. Could be recorded so they don't have to go to the court.
Just look how they treated the poor chap that found 30 dollars on a Walmart floor. They're not reducing actual crime, just looking to cast a bigger net of citizens into the for profit prison labor camps
I think its even more pathetic. I think cops don't want to think so they just go with whatever the Ai says.
