- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

This is essentially how living language works.
Gay meant showy and carefree as in we'll have a gay ol' time! In the late 19th and early 20th centuries gay became a euphemism for fellows who liked the company of other men for romance instead of women, as those dudes were, well, a bit queer, and it wasn't polite to talk about such things in mixed company. People in the mlm category often expressed showiness and had a carefree (family-light) lifestyle and so other conversants generally caught on.
Heck, there's kind of a euphemism revolution going on in social media since posts and comments can commonly be flagged for talking about delicate subjects, and keywords can draw the notice of uninvited readers (and put people on watch lists). Hence suicide becomes unlife, rape becomes grape, Israel becomes Is-not-so-real and so on.
Recently, a correspondent started using blood libel as a noun referring to those outrageous MAGA lies used to demonize outgroups, such as They're eating the dogs! It's much the way the original blood libel was an accusation against Jewish folk (used by the Nazis, but it didn't originate with them). I picked it up quickly.
(Blood libels are more effective if they're implausible since they serve for costly signaling. By chirping out one in conversation, a MAGA signals their nature to other MAGA while sounding unhinged to anyone else.)
When I read let's triangle back on that I interpreted it to mean, going back to the desk to verify facts and develop the idea, stopping in the lunch room for a snack, and coming back to the next meeting, well prepared. That makes sense to me.
The idea refrigerator sounds like what someone might suggest if they don't know the expression to table that [idea] for now. Greenbeards sonetimes get confused by tabling used as a verb. I think it's unintuitive.
This dude's new lexicon may have been random, but we human beings are so good at constellationing (seeing intent and skill in simple video-game AI) that we'll find meaning in word salad by inference and intuition.
(It's also how Trump can spout gibberish and his base reads it as four-dimensional chess. Those of us more savvy, recognize a fast talk and flim-flam when we see it, sometimes from the experience of being fooled by confidence ploys before.)
This one is tricky because it goes opposite ways across the pond. In the UK Parliament to table a bill means they're going to bring it up for consideration right now. In fact bills and motions under consideration are actually laid out on that central table in the House of Commons.
In US Congress, a motion to lay on the table is a request to halt consideration on a bill for an indefinite (and probably infinite) period. There is no physical table in the US Congress where dead bills are placed.
Tangential thought: and when I engage with such delicate topics, my keyboard sometimes glitches & spontaneously switches to Russian, and that's how big brother reminds me they're watching & listening, so I'd best behave! 😜 Literally happened a few minutes ago on a delicate topic regarding Israel/Palestine genocide 😓 My keyboard glitched & switched to Russian 🤔
If you're on either windows or Linux, a keyboard layout or language needs to be added to your settings to switch between the two with a hotkey combination. No idea where the setting currently is in windows (it became very mobile when MS started moving settings around all the time), but in KDE, it's under keyboard settings. There will be a language and then a layout, plus a key combination for switching between the two (IIRC in windows, the key combo might not even be on the same page).
Though another possibility is there's a hardware switch on the keyboard itself or maybe a custom driver if you had to install anything to use that keyboard.
Anyways, maybe that information will help in looking into what's actually going on (maybe your key combo is something you hit when talking about the forbidden topics) or stop it from happening (by removing the Russian language and keyboard layout if you don't normally have reason to use them).
This all happens on my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. I plead ignorance to "windows, Linux, hotkey combination, MS, KDE," etc. I have no idea what any of that means. I deliberately have 2 language options installed on my keyboard to amuse my toddler-level proficiency in Russian & use it occasionally for funsies, but to switch languages on my keyboard requires some deliberate effort. Every time it glitches & switches languages on its own in the middle of my thumb pecking out English sentences, it spooks me. And I attribute it to big brother because what else can I do 🤷🏼♀️
That's paranoia.
Don't be paranoid. Do pay attention, identify patterns.
