Moderator Guidelines
Moderator Guidelines
- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

I’m sorry but I HATE folks. I’m down with virtually all other gender neutral terms, but I psychologically can’t uncouple ‘folks’ from pseudo-homespun charm put on by people who are sleazebags for various reasons. Anything but folks, I beg (general) you
I use folks all the time!
...but i'm also a server at waffle house, so I guess I am using southern culture and folksy charm to sell you waffles and coffee. It's a soulless existence, I know, but at least I have my cold, hard cash tips to keep me warm at night.
I use the word folks regularly :(
That makes me sad
Don’t let one person’s pet peeves determine your language, even if they’re my pet peeves!
It makes me sad that it made you sad so to correct this I'll go out of my way to use folks from time to time
Yay
That's all folks!
I love “folks”! It makes me think of folklore and looney tunes.
Well no, it doesn't, because it's a different word. Plenty of words have similar meanings or origins while having very different connotations from each other. See for example the whole [saxon? norman? whatever] vs french root thing in english, where words with identical meanings but different root languages came to have different connotations (worker vs laborer) or even different meanings (cow vs beef).
Another example: cavalier vs caballero. Cavalier comes from the French word for knight, and that's caballero in Spanish, but the meaning is completely different. One is arrogant, one is noble (the good kind, yeah I do get how they are related and where and why the meanings shifted).
Just that you shouldn't expect two words that have similar meanings to be treated the same way, because they often have different connotations and usages.
Do you know what a connotation is? Frankly this is a bit annoying and I'm going to be blunt: it's exceedingly obvious that it's a difference in connotation (as I've said three times now) rather than in definition*. The difference is the context of how the words are used and the associations they have.
That is the difference.
* There are definitional differences too but it doesn't really matter.
OP stated the difference clearly. I just quoted to you exactly where they said the difference. The definition is essentially the same but they are used and associated in different ways. I do not understand how you are confused or what further explanation you need here.
I only use it to refer to my "parents" cuz saying parents otherwise makes me feel like I'm in grade school again or some shit. Otherwise to refer to others as folks feels weird to me.
Neighbor?
Another fine word ruined by the US.
I just hear the word in Davey's voice from Adventure Time and it has completely taken the term over. I can't even say folks without impersonating Davey anymore.
