and what does insurance actually pay from that 500k?
i have more medical debt than probably all of you. i was running up millions of dollars worth of charges every month.
the insurance did not pay millions of dollars every month.
Considering the copay is 20%, probably most of it. If not, they're sticking the insured with a far higher percentage of the cost than agreed on. Granted, I also get copay assistance so I don't actually pay $100,000 per month. But Strensiq really does cost millions per year per patient at this time.
So I've been on both sides of the stethoscope and total charges have little bearing on what insurance pays. If they bill you a million and your copay is 100k, (private, not Medicare) insurance is probably paying 50k.
