I mean, IRC is not dead, there are still active chatrooms and there's even an implementation that allows sharing media over the room.
I think IRC will always have its place, because it's simple and easy to set up. Great for communities when someone wants to chat about what the community is about or needs quick help.
I for myself miss forums, especially since it acts as an archive as well as for various other things. It's atrocious how Discord managed to take its place and made things so much worse.
The way I see it is, for many things on the internet, the raw number of people using them has stayed steady or even gone up slightly, but there are so many more people who wouldn't have used the old internet online now, and much of the money and energy goes to catering to them, which means Facebook, Instagram, Reddit etc. The people who know what they're doing still use the old internet. We should be extending our arms to the people stuck on social media, who think that is the whole thing.
So many people struggle just to understand / use Facebook, that's where they stop - if it isn't on Facebook, or their other platform of choice, it's dead to them because they just won't take the time.
